Old transport digs

mushroomman:
Hi Dave, was it The Lord Montague  I seem to remember a pub in New Cross called The Montague Arms where Jimmy Jones the comedian was the regular compare before he got famous. The blind kid who played the organ I believe went on to be Lennie Peters from Peters and Lee. It was always full of drivers many of which had parked up at places like Valance Road, Aldgate and Shepherds Bush just to have a good night out. It was a fair way to travel on the tube but you were always sure of a good laugh.

Regards Steve.

aye you’re right , it was the montague arms . a good night , strippers , a band ( usually good ) and a comedian , jimmy jones or mike ried , although mike was at the adam and eve at peckham mostly . they did a tv documentary from the montague at that time , and guess who was on camera on the front table .the wife was decidedly unimpressed , dave

I remember the Sally Ann in Liverpool very well, stayed there many times and the scalies when you parked up, used to be two bob then one night parked up the scaly said half a crown Mr I said it used to be two bob it’s gone up Mr. he said, bugger off said I, they’ll do your motor Mr. say’s he, couldn’t care less it’s not mine said I, and went of to the digs, got back in the morning expecting the worst checked all round the motor all ok until I went to open the door they had spread turntable grease under the door handles….need I say anymore….bless’em.

jmc jnr:
I had a couple of nights in the Durose Transport Motel whilst my motor was in Lex Tillotsons. Boy could those Caledonian drivers snore and “trump” Jim.

A pal of mine over here int Isle of Man remembers taking all the old counters out of Durose Cafe,he says there were enough silverfish to fill a Grimsby trawler.

So what happened to silverfish haven’t seen any in years, used to get them round coal fires why was that?

hiya,
spent most of my life as a long distance driver (sorry youngbloods trucker)was mainly a tramper but have done trunk and general work also never fancied the cab for sleeping in and have had sleeper cabs, bunk great for stowing chains & ropes my perogative of course stayed one night at london house kirkpatrick fleming you was given a bed number to which your get up time was attached to anyway i went for a pint or two returned after closing time someone had climbed into my bed so rather than make a fuss i got into the only bed left when i went for my breakfast the boss a polish guy said i was banned and not try to and book there again seemingly the guy who had nicked my bed a munro’s driver had snored his head off all night and a few of the guys had complained about the noise it was sorted later by one or two drivers who had been in the pub with me and i even got an apology thanks harry long retired.

where did u keep your chains

hiya,
bunk for ropes and chains and tensioners passengers side clear for cab traffic thanks harry long retired

i had a n/o in cardiff when i worked for davis bros, when we used to load the armco barrier, two of us went to the digs where the evening meal was stuffed hearts, which were still beating, so we walked down the road to find a chippie and a pub, that was a lot better, in the morning we settled for 2 bits of toast, after loading we set off home but i was itching so much i stopped before newport, undid my shirt and saw i was covered in bites, the driver i was with had the same, they were bedbug bites, that was the last transport digs i ever used. i would have sooner slept in the passenger seat of a thames trader.

There were a couple of owner drivers I knew who worked for Norman Lewis in the early days. John Barwise who was as cab happy as many on here, he was often spotted with a can of pledge and a feather duster  . The other guy was Stan Burden, (Budgie) who always bought new Scania.

I looked in his cab one day when I was tipping near him, he had a trailer light board, ropes, chains, light lenses and various greasy tools and hoses on the bed, he said he could always chuck them on the seat or sleep in the seats

What you have to think of is this. An inanimate object which is lying harmlessly on the cab floor, becomes a lethal projectile, should you have an accident. I refused to carry anything in the cab, which isn’t secured. What a tragedy it would be should the worst happen and you have a crash and survive the impact only to have your head stoved in by that jack handle or wheel brace.

ok we were in day cabs night out money around ÂŁ2 to 3.sleeping across the seats in our marathon but the joke was a northern driver had a sleeper cab and said his gaffer had just bought him a new wagon with a big parcel shelf for all his ropes etc. yes bit of a north /south thing but we still slept across the seats for a few years ,ice inside etc.
