Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

windrush:
When Slaters were part of the Thomas Tilling Group (TILCON) they had a training school at their Kirkby Misperton base. I spent two week’s there in February 1976 doing my HGV training on an old F registered S 34 Foden eight legger with a 150 Gardner, tilt cab, 12 speed g/box and a hydraulic throttle that kept losing pressure so that you had to pump it to get the revs back up! The test was taken in Scarborough and the Thornton Dale quarry was used for the manouvering exercises. Our instructor was an old ex Slater’s driver named MATTY, he could tell a tale or two! Good days.

Pete.

Mark, they are not out of place in the north east thread. I used to work for a steel stockholder in the late sixties (Miles Druce Metals Hebburn) and I regularly delivered to a Tilcon depot in Weardale, either Wolsingham or Frosterley I can’t remember which. Cheers Kevin.

Slaters bought out the aone depot at Thornaby, Teeside. They took on aone`s work out of Lackenby adding it to work they already had out of Skinningrove works. You probably saw a lot of my Slaters unit in and about Sunderland when I worked for them, used to park my trailer in Chester road city center car park when home. When I worked for aone/Chapmans I used to park with Stan at P/well trading estate.

hi f7sidd
excellent photos you have put on do you have any of Grady-Hall who ran out of Burnopfield then birtley
they had both tippers and tankers
thanks
mick

heres a couple of ouseburn and a shepherds tipper with a bit of explaining to do

Ahh, great pics ■■■■■, just thought I’d try the site before going to kip. Good one of Kenny Hogg and Lenny North, didn’t know Ouseburn had a TM! and don’t know what Derek’s up to, looks dodgy though. It was Len who told me there might be a job going at Steenburg’s one day at Norman’s Cafe so I called round and got started, sadly though it was a shadow of its former self, there was only a half dozen motors, I got a twin steer Sed/Atki 401, this was in the Blue and White livery like the Seddon in the pic. Bob Dowling had the F10, Cliff Natton a Strato, Lenny a Maggie I think and there was a lad drove an FL7 but can’t remember his name, they had a four wheel Volvo FL6 too that anyone jumped into. Shame it all went downhill rapidly, I was only there a couple of years, came in one day and the 401 had been took to the auctions, didn’t even tell me, so it was time to jump ship. Hope you can get some more pics up. Cheers Franky.

Is that Gateshead Goods yard Jim, or do I just associate the livestock with saturday on the Quayside?

Hi Franky heres another for you

Cheers for the Maggie pic all are welcome, Ouseburn went for these in a big way as they were impressed with the first ones they bought early Seventies, I remember being home on leave from the army and spent the day with my old man, he had one of the Seddons with the Rolls 220. Stan Bell the workshop Foreman showed me around the new Magirus, it was still in its Red Oxide chassis colour and White cab, I asked when it was getting painted but he said they weren’t going to bother as the factory finish was so good. I think the first couple ran around like this for a while until the newer White cab and Light Blue livery came about, as far as I know they had good service over the years from the Maggie Deutz, they had traditionally stuck with Seddon and Fords, in the lighter weights, and a sprinkling of other makes.
I know one of the Steenburg’s (I think it was Ollie) took a lot of photo’s of the fleet over the years, Dad often said he took photo’s especially if they had interesting loads so he must have built up quite a collection, I wonder if they are still around! Cheesrs Franky.
