started at simpsons in 85 at stocksfield cannot remember martin ! great job at the time a real family firm with peters dad george still pottering about everybody helped each other not like these days where everyones in a rush and aint got a minute !

Martin is quite tall well just over 6ft blond ish hair going thin on top glasses quite stocky

ive found this one, dont know where i got it from and i cant remember them to be homest, must of been before my time, when did they pack in. do you or anyone else remember another small tipper firm from chester le street whalton a father and two sons running out of arc houghton le spring in the early 80s the father was called harry i think and he had a 4 wheeler daf and the sons had 6 wheeler hinos new at the time, they were painted green
That Bambrough’s motor must have been when they were still at Chester le Street. I’ve borrowed this one from Bubbleman’s thread, hope he doesn’t mind. By then they were part of the Marsh group. Iirc their yard was next to Coopers car auctions at Portobello.

Maybe someone will remember them from this.

Small world Bri, that Foden 2stroke belonged to that chap inspecting the “nightmare”, (Ralph Crow) the Albion was owned by the late John Holgate. It was his pride and joy. kevmac47

me dad Joe Bladen , worked with john holgate when he was a mixer driver @houghton quarry for arc premix - i have a pic on my pc at home - will post it up nxt time im home

I don’t recall your dad Duncan, but a combination of age, brown ale, and whisky is bound to take it’s revenge over the years!!! I hope you manage to post some pics of the vehicles that ran out of Houghton Quarry as they were mostly all immaculate (from what I can remember through the alcohol and time induced haze), as anyone who has worked on mixers knows even one day not cleaning the neck of the drum has a major impact on the amount of work needed to keep the vehicle looking it’s best.Regards kevmac47

Ok do any of you old Simpson drivers know a Martin Hutchinson now drives for Elldis was there a long time as I knew him when he first started there in about 86/87 ish

Have met Mickey Fisher with his son

Martin Hutchison drove this drawbar while i was there then he went onto the artics

Mickey Fisher had also turned this wagon over with a full load of steel on

Yep remember him driving that & then the artics & can tell some stories about him which are true as do sometimes speak to both of his kids & he was shacked up with my ex dragon

i remember the day that drag came in the yard john leadbeater wanted me to go load it at pureplas and take it to aberdeen dairy. boy was i pleased when there was a change of plan. not my cup of tea so went to andover with alan potts

Dave, here’s the model I built of your MAN, it isn’t the one mentioned above, I built the old King trailer too just haven’t got a pic handy to put on, never got around to doing the Crane for a load but will one day, I plan to refurb it a little, signwriting etc as its a bit long in the tooth now, still sitting on my shelf but gathering dust.

The last pic is of the NEWER lowloader in Rolls Royce with that bloody awful FL7.

Cheers Franky.

Hi Franky… hard to believe its a model it looks so life like, seems like I could just climb in and set off. That FL would have been usefull instead of G105 the day Bob sent me into Rolls, just aquick 1hr job says he. I had to reverse into the door behind the crane, load the machine, pull back out onto the road then reverse into the door on the offside there next to the tank. It must have took over 4hrs by the time I got all the scrap and other rubbish shifted then each door must have took 12-15 shunts, some time only moving 4-5 ft at a time, just to get the front end round, boy did I get a sweat on. Of course didnt help Bob being on the radio every few minutes. In the end the shop manager got on and told Bob they would pay time rate, as it was taking so long, through no fault of mine. Think it might have been easier had I had the breakneck tr, it being shorter. I remember the model in the office at Castletown, forgotten how many hours went into it but was quite a lot and it showed…Dave

anyone know what happened to Alan clark who drove at simpsons around the time davie erwin micky fisher alan potts jimmy mcglassen etc were there?

i dont know his surname, but hes called steve. he wasnt at chastneys long

I was working for the Wild Group,(Vic Wild),in 1971 when he bought out McPhees, who had a fleet of non sleeper Scania 110’s at the time.
Vic sold the Scania’s off and replaced them with Atki Borderers in the Wild Group livery.
