Another Job well done by the Dunbars, Sunderland Air Museum.

Hi Forster
that lead work motor fleet number 43 you posted who was the driver?
cheers Davie

Sorry Davie, but I have no idea who the driver was.
I doubt that these days any motor with ‘lead’ written on it would not stay parked up for long!

Davie- just a thought- perhaps the driver might have been Paddy Howland- he lived between Throckley and Heddon
Regards, Eric.

Hi Eric
You right there an empty wheel barrow aint safe in Throckley. I think we may be getting a bit closer to the mystery driver tho, it’s possible the driver was a fella called BIlly Walker (no relation to TT) who lived in the pit rows next to where the photo was taken, I,ve passed on a copy to a relative of his an old Rytons driver called Harry Clark, & to Colin Henderson who drove for the lead works alot of yrs, who also lives in Throckley to see if i can get anymore info

Regards Davie

Hi Larry, Drivers I remember at TT Walkers, on the tippers were Andy and Charlie (surnamesunknown) they both drove Ford Traders,(RNL 129 was one of them,) and Derek Summers- he drove the International ‘Loadstar’ (D reg. I think) The foreman fitter was nicknamed ‘Black Sid’, so called because he was always covered in oil & grease from cap to boots! His surname was Walker-not sure if he was any relation to TT. I sometimes subbed for TT, the next days work sheets would be collected on an evening from what always seemed to be a deserted yard at Newburn-perhaps it was a case of ‘last man in, close the gates’ Regards, Eric.

I remember old Sid he was as you say as black as the ace of spades,I also remember Geo. Bold the TM. An awkward sort of fellow, he used to tell porkies all the time, promising drivers a better motor if someone was leaving, I recall a driver Tommy Money having a Seddon 4 wheel tipper, he was moving on, & Boldy promised he motor to 4 drivers just to keep them there, they were doing a bit work out of Moot Law Quarry at that time, which was a rat race., that was 1968. Regards Larry.

Hi lads Old Sid is related to Tommy both characters by all accounts my dad used tell me stories about how Tommy would sack everyone then go along to the boat house with the wages and set them back on. That was when the yard was next door to the dole office, very handy. Last time I saw Derek summers he was driving 8 wheeler scammel for coka cola at Throckley in the late 80,s before it became Simpsons yard

Oops I must be seeing double in my senior years. Regards Larry.

Not a haulage company as such, but there is a connection. The TK in the bottom left of the picture is an ex W&B vehicle, but owned and sub-contracted back to them by JW (Jacky) Snee, from N/cle quayside. The only difference to W&B’s own vehicles was that, although it had a W&B fleet number, this was prefixed with an ‘S’. Jack Snee’s brother Bill always worked as second man on it, to driver Bob Thompson.
W&B were early users of demount bodies (around 1971), the curtainsiders in the picture used the swap body system made by AC Penman, Dumfries. Even the tail lifts were demountable by using their own power pack, they were lifted off and moved on wheeled trolley’s to be put on another body. One of the reasons for using demout’s was at that time, the DVLA stated that if the bodies were swapped ‘regularly’, road tax was paid on the weight of the chassis/cab only.

JVK 738L (fleet no. 102) pictured when new.

Jacky Snee thats a blast from the past, I remember his yard on the Close opposite Alexander & Wood this fish people, there was one of his wagons in a film that was driven by old Fred Henry, one of the shots was filmed in the Compass Cafe at Colsterworth on the A 1, I cant recall what it called but I think It was also filmed in Newcastle, Regards Larry.

Hi Lawrence, I was talking to a visitor to my sons house at Christmas who told me she was brought up in Gosforth, conversation turned to the Town Moor and I mentioned the opencast working there whereby the lady looked at me in disbelief. Mind you she was perhaps 10 years younger than me here you have the proof I well remember travelling up from The Blue House Crossing to Cowgate en route from Blyth to ■■■■■■■■
Cheers Leyland 600.

Hi, Having a Chapman Leveroll seat was a sign of having a quality wagon you had good hight and reach adjustment, perhaps a bit hard but firm. Wish I,d had a £1 for every mile I have driven on one.
Cheers. Leyland 600.

Hi all this might be a long shot. I am hoping someone out thee might have so photos of the trucks or depot of Hardwicks that was based behind the park in Spennymoor now with houses on it. My Grandfather work for a few different company’s in the Spennymoor area and finished his days at Hardwicks. Would be nice for him to have a look back at some pictures. I have found things on Dents and Williamson but I am really stuck on finding any photos of Hradwicks. Would be grateful for any help :0)

Deighton Bros,

Hi f7sidd Loverly photo of my old Foden where was it taken ?, and do you have any more of Deightons Regards crowbar

OK you “older” truckers out there. What was the strangest INSTRUCTIONS you got for your load.

In my case it was a question I was asked,“Can you Swim?” I said yes but not very good. “You ever been on a landing craft” “Nope…WHY?” Tomorrow you will be delivering to a LIGHTHOUSE!" Now that can conjure up some strange and even scary images in a young lad’s mind. So I went home wondering just where I was going the next day. All I could think of was St Mary’s Island at Whitley Bay, couldnt be that, its joined to the car park…
Now I couldnt work out where I was going, so just accepted I might get me feet wet at some stage. Next morning I found out I’d been set up by the foreman, Transport gaffer and even the customer. All the crack about landing craft and swimming was a leg pull.
I was only going to Souters Point Light near Whitburn. Totally landlocked. Was my face red. So I went, and was talking to the customer about being set up, and he just said" I Know!"
Thinking about it later, I worked out there wouldnt be many places where a lighthouse was that had room for a truck to land, deliver stuff and get off again, landing craft or not!
Not daft me Like…[Not Much!]
