Hi Keith, Have a look on page 248 there is some Scanias that McPhees had, Regards Larry.
Nice 50’s pic of the time here on Sandhill with a Marsden Warehousing motor and cars of the period, Bettie Surtees house is in the background where she eloped to Scotland from with John Scott in 1772 because her Father did not approve of Scott, a coal merchant’s son, however he later became Lord Eldon and Lord Chancellor of England.

Just had a quick shufty on the net and Hepplewhite & Shaw were based in Low Row/ Looks like they were a pre-war outfit that were nationalised after the war.
hello chaps, I know i’m late to this particular party …but such is the story of my life, on the subject of hepplewhite and shaw, my old man did his haulage apprenticeship there just after the war…1947>1952 I think, born in 1931 he was just 16 when he started, big, mature and a natural behind the wheel his mentor often used to let him take the wheel while the man had a nap…different times!!! i’ve got some good photos of the vehicles he drove before doing his national service in the R.E.M.E. (and one of his mobile workshop)…which facilitated a career change into the repair of this new fangled box in the corner called television!!! I myself have followed in his tyretracks working for the last 26 years in the industry.
any info as to getting photos loaded on to the site would be gratefully received…techophobe numpty!!!

Hi Gav, I got this photo from Bumper, Regards Larry.
cheers for your help in getting the pics up lads, I hope the wait was worth it, I had a sit down today with the old man and all of a sudden it was ‘story time’ I am going to get him to join the forum so tales of the old-days can come from the horses mouth so to speak, believe me when I say apart from ‘iffy’ knees at 85 his gardener 180 is firing on all cylinders and nothing makes his eyes glass over more than talking about halcyon days gone…exept maybe the sound of a meadows 10.6 petrol in an explorer!!

I am new to this, but having read a lot of past items I was wondering if you could help me. I`m trying to get some info on Currie & Co of Newcastle, fleet size, types of vehicles, fleet colour, anything really. My late father worked for them before, during & after the war but then moved across the river to SPD beside the Swing Bridge, any gen would be appreciated, all the things I should have asked him when he was still with us.
