Norman lived next door to our yard at Eighton Banks. He used the yard for years as parking place and workshop. He very nearly had his own personal fitter ( Dennis). Anything we wanted lifting in the yard and Norman was there, great lad, would do anything. His radio call sign was DOG. Old Mr Reed would sometimes drop by with spares for the crane, he was another character!!! Norman is retired now but still liveS at Eighton Banks and I call into see him occaisionly

Yes Larry thats him, I think he originally came from Felling but moved into the new estate at Eighton Banks when it was built in the late sixties ealy seventies. when he first came up our way he used to drive an old Bay City crane (think thats what they were called) and always wore a leather flying helmet. Crowbar would probably know him too.
Sean Hannah lived on the same estate at Eighton Banks when he had Newcatle Crane Hire, think he tried to get Norman to work for him but he always stuck with Reeds. Cheers Tyneside

Aye Tyneside I thought that this would be him, He was good crack way back in those good old days, The last time I was talking to him was in the 90s, He was still at Reeds, He was lifting an old wartime water storage tank down at Stannington where we had a garage, It was used to supply water to a Egg Producing Co after the wartime usage, Thanks for the Info, Regards Larry.
Yes Norman was with Reeds a long time, very good at his job and knew exactly where you would want the lift put on the trailer, nice to hear he’s relaxing in retirement now. Larry I knew Micky Wilson when at Fergy’s, he had an ERF then and subbied for them, he had us laughing one day after coming back from Hartlepool, a guy in a car followed him and when stopped remonstrated with Micky for cutting him up, the bloke said he would ring the number on the wagon and inform his Boss, Micky said well do it around half six I should be in for my tea by then! Good job we had these laughs to kep us going eh. Franky.

Hiya,
Many happy returns Jim Russell and very many more of them have a good drink
mate but always remembering not to totally empty the bottle.
thanks harry, long retired.
Nice pic of my old mate Phil Webster’s MAN, certainly all those years of hard work with his old Ford D Series collecting and delivering small plant when he started up have paid off, I haven’t seem him for a lot of years and like me he will be nearing retirement unless he’s carrying on, he always was a grafter. Franky.

Ah great photo’s Larry, I know Steven well but unfortunately haven’t seen him for a while since his Parents died, he’s a smashing lad, please give him our regards from me and our family next time you see him. Steve’s Dad Bill actually got my Dad started at Steenburgs in the 60’s and they remained great pals until they both passed away. Bill was a bit of a character, he was the first driver I saw that wore an American Baseball style cap and of course he always had his Pipe, I would be surprised if Steven didn’t have anymore pics of his dad and the wagons he drove. Being a long serving Ouseburn driver my father told me Bill often got the newest wagons to break in and as you know many firms operated this way, the latest additions to fleets handed to the ‘top’ men in the company before others got behind the wheel. Regarding the older top photo I recognise Jock Mundell in the middle at the back but I’ll have to look closely at the others and try and drag some names from memory, I would think that is a Seddon Larry, although I’ll scour that a bit more too, they were faithful users of them and Fords with a sprinkling of other makes too. Lovely to see these cheers Larry.
Can you remember their TTs, Regards Larry.
Sure do Larry, my fathers first motor at Ouseburn was a four wheel flat Trader 507 FUP, I think all the family remembers that Reg No, we went all over in it. It went like stink, he was loaded for Edinburgh one day and at dinner time Bill came past our house (nipping home for his dinner) he pulled up wondering why the Trader was still parked in the same place as he had seen it in the morning. First thing he asked Dad was ‘I thought you were loaded for Edinburgh’, he nearly swallowed his pipe when dad told him he was, ‘I’ve been, tipped and that’s me back’! Bill said for hells sake don’t go near the yard today then. Another lad, Stevey Spoores blew the engine up on the Ford when dad was on holiday, he was gutted but went onto Artics after that. They had a good few Traders, units and rigids mainly because one of the Sreenbergs was married to the woman who’s family owned the Ford dealership at the time! Happy days Franky.
Hi, Franky, They had one or two of these A5 Bedford Scammell coupling units,Regards Larry, Many thanks again to Steve for the photos.

Another photo of Steenbergs from the Quayside Newcastle, & Thanks once again to Steve for passing these on to me, Regards Larry.
