the lad in question was john ancrum he came to gradys as a night shift fitter iirc he had his own motor a scammell crusader at one time. got to say the axles were c##p.
dont know what happened to himJohn Ancrum spent a lot of time at the small Innovation Centre workshop opposite Van Hee’s Pelaw yard trialing his add on axle. A good idea in theory but by the time it got perfected (if it actually did) most companies had gone for the three axle unit and trailer anyway, the road tax was cheaper. If I remember the unit he had at the time was a 111 Scania, I did have a pic of the add on axle somewhere, I’ll have a look for it. Cheers Franky.
Yes John Ancrum, that was his name, he drove a red KM artic subbing for Miles Druce before he got involved with that axle. ( I’m a bit late replying as I’ve been away for a few days) Regards Kev.

Do any of you Elldis drivers remember Eddie Harding, A big strapping lad he worked at Smiles for Miles the same time as I did in the earley 60s, He lived at Pruhoe at that time, I recall when he was going over Standedge his was in a laybye when some wagon going up took the side of his cab, He was driving a AEC Mercury artic at that time, I towed the unit into Manchester & we loaded onto the back of my 8 wheeler on a ramp in Langley Road Salford It was Cucacks depot before Mcveighs of Grimsby took it over, I wonder if he is still about & remembers this incedent, Regards Larry.
This AEC unit was taken up to Jakey Robsons at Blackhill for repair IIRC, & someone took a photo of it before it was fixed & It was shown in one of the local papers, With the heading saying Mr Smiles wouldn’t be smiling to-day, I wish I had cut it out of the paper, Happy Days Eh, Regards Larry.
