Old habits die hard

I still say 10 bob and 2 bob and will always be a wagon driver,I just cant say lorry and drove me Mums Zephyr 4 with bench seat and column gearchange the day I passed me test in September 73 and in the same decade went on to sup tanker loads of that ■■■■■ Whitbread Trophy bitter. Going back around 20 years we had some Y and A reg Leyland Clydesdales that I still called Albions, and somewhat oddly I asked the shunter for the keys for a Vabis earlier this week,he said nowt but kept looking, though not at me!!

Doesn’t really make sense though does it? All this talk of old money.

240p in a pound? Ok perhaps if 240 1p coins weighed 1lb, but they don’t they weigh 1.8lb. So none of it makes sense at all.

Mind you, the only thing I absolutely wish they had never invented is the mobile phone! Finished early last week, got to 3pm and the boss rang me with another 13 pallets that needed collecting. Pre-phone days that would never have happened!
So get rid of the phone.

I’ll keep the iPad though, and the aircon, and the internet, but the boss being able to disturb me on the road?! it just ain’t cricket!

And even then it was cheaper to nick the 2T oil while your mate was shielding the oil pump

Move on 40 years and we are back to doing the same thing with trucks, fueling up and then using a separate nozzle to pump ■■■■

Dandelion and Burdock pop with the flip top on the bottle (glass) and you would get thruppence back when you took the bottle back.

Pea Shooter and Pidgin Peas at the Sat Morn Flicks, what would health and safety say about that.

The only one of three built

Who remembers the palaver of using a “gettoni” phone to phone for a reload?  :grimacing:

I had the Puch M50 sport (still wasn’t any faster than any other moped,) but looked more like a real bike

my mate had a Malaguti, now that was a decent looking moped (when I was 16)

It makes more sense than you might think:

240 divides down into 120 (ten bob note), 30 (half a crown), 24 (two bob), 12 (shilling), 6 (sixpence), 3 (threepence), 1 (penny), ½ (halfpenny, ¼ (farthing).

Remember that in those days things cost a small fraction of todays prices. When I started driving we got 7/6 (40p) a night out. It was possible to make a profit on that even when staying in digs. Of course wages were small as well - £20 a week was top money for a driver.

Shops used the same tricks as today - Stuff priced a £19.99 now would have been 19/11½ (Nineteen and elevenpence halfpenny - a halfpenny short of a pound) then.

The pound was originally a pound of silver bullion I think.

Similar, yes. It was originally built as a Mk1 Mexico estate by Ford AVO and then later fitted with a 2.0litre Pinto to make it into an RS 2.0. It has all the Mexico arches, strengthening and even the battery in the back to make room for the Weber Carburetor.

Notice on the yellow Mexico, the battery is still under the bonnet.
