Old Firms in Oxford Area

JAKEY:
Hi Big g . Doug wheeler has not got a shop by the old johnson cafe , the shop is “house of Honda” , Doug use to have a shop at the bottom of the Cowley rd but now have a shop in Witney .(the guy who ran the Cowley road was Morgan !!!).

Sorry I cant recall the name of the guy who owns the House of Honda .

Hi JAKEY and George
House of Honda was owned by Doug Harper (Harpers of Cowley) and I’m not to sure but Doug Wheeler might have been there before Doug Harper and Honda. Doug Wheeler had connections with Garsington and later had a bike place somewhere in the village.
George you are right about Len Johnson, he was the father of Joe the motorbike scrambler(posh name motocross) and Doug Wheeler was also a motorbike scrambler and mentor to young Joe.
Starting from the roundabout and on the right it was CKD then Dealers Deliveries yard, Johnsons Cafe, Harpers of Cowley then the Station approach,( passenger side) then Alders Newsagent, under the bridge it was Cowley Ironworks then Ashville Way and Sandy Lane. On the left after the bridge was Station Goods yard the Morris Garages on the corner, left into what is now Transport Way, rh side Walls Icecream, Brookes Bookbinders then Dykes Bros, can’t remember next one, opposite Dykes was Progressive, next door was B J Hendry at the top the road split and went round both sides of J Harding and Son and H and M Transport yard.
*Dealers Deliveries were mostly platers with two transporters on contract to Stewart and Arden of London and the Home Counties
I really enjoyed my time in and around Oxford, all 37 years of it and especially the sixties.
Cheers
Oily

Hi Steve,
Well young Dave Harris as I live & breath! Do you see Dave often? Next time send him my best please, I started the same day as Dave on Air Products, with Steve Hatter who is still on there now, we went through all the weeks of classroom training etc together, sound bloke! That was his regular wagon he lent against on AP, the 1 next to it 132 was Roger Gaines (Shop Steward). 1 thing to notice, look at the way he was dressed, clean uniform/polished boots/shirt & tie, that was the way you had to be on AP, awesome job, top money, great employer, but in return you had to be professional at all times, believe me it was a small thing for them to ask for such a great job! Nice pics of the Timbmet Clydesdale sleeper too, & the old Cargo. People had mixed feelings about the Cargo, but I had 1 on Desking Systems, Chalgrove, me & Gibbo shared it Steve (have you seen him lately?), it had the Deutz engine in it & she went like a scalded cat!!!
Regards Chris

I remember him Steve, Dennis was a legend remembered and missed by lots of people. I was lucky enough to meet Dennis when I first started driving as a young lad ( yeah I know your going to say something like was I driving a steam wagon  ) Dennis was a top man and a good friend for years. RIP Dennis.
