They would have had to improve the system a lot, make it stronger for more weight and safer so there was no chance for loosing trailers but it was a good idea.
I notice Walmart over here have powered landing gear on some trailer, combined with a powered fith wheel it make life a bit easier.

Yes, I agree winding legs in this day and age does seem an old fashioned idea but I guess its the cheapest and most reliable option so changes are resisted.
Cant see why the legs couldnt be air or electrically opperated with an emergancy override though, much simpler then a shammel coupling
They were a clever idea and with a short single axle trailer they almost turned in their own length with a Scarab at the front
I remember one of the questions on my test was to describe three things to check that your air pressure was satisfactory.
The answers were Gauge, Flag or Siren
I remember when it was all fields round here, you could into the pictures,a pint,a fish supper and a bus home for 3n6 blah blah…
Still see trailers with that coupling system in what used to be ICI wilton.
I worked for National Carriers in 1980, had a TK unit small wheels, pulling a short single axle trailer with a Scammell coupling, we used to call them Toytown artics, you used to get an inferiority complex if some poser in a Ford Transcontinental pulled alongside you at the lights, and his girlfriend was sat looking down at you laughing , as you sat hunched over the steering wheel looking ridiculous
another favourite question in the test was " what is brake fade" ?

That old and still found his Way into computing
…Perhaps he did his IT training on one of these…
I took my class one on a Bedford TK with Scammell coupling.
