Old driver`s in powerful cars

Some old codgers are a danger when they doddle along at 35 mph .I so often sit there reading things on their boot lid like ,twin spark ,fuel injected and turbo.Use it or lose it,thats my opinion.

That doesn’t always work, I used it and got 5 pts and £300 fine,

not according to the insurance industry!

isnt that the trouble with statistics though some coffin dodger can tootle along at 30mph causing other road users problems but he is the safe driver not the people doing a normal speed :open_mouth: i think once you get past a certain age say 70 you should have to do an assesment (not a test) to say your safe on the road (awaits greif from this!). i do however think if you have the money buy what you want however if you have worked for it and want it buy it :stuck_out_tongue: .

I doubt that insurance statistics are that simple.
They will factor in all incidents that an old driver is involved in, even if he isn’t the one making the claim.
I don’t mean each individual old timer for his own insurance premiium, but the weighting they apply for age.
As for medicals etc at an old age, I don’t have a problem with that but bear in mind old people generally visit their doctor more frequently than younger ones, so a doctor(the same one who will fill in the medical report you suggest) is already in a position to advise the coffin dodger and/or DVLA of any problems on an ongoing basis.

sorry i meant a driving assesment to say they are safe on the road! not a medical i assume this is already in force after a certain age?

I think that posters who put apostrophes in the wrong places should be taped to a greengrocer’s window and have rotten fruit thrown at them.

my fault, your post was clear enough, I didn’t read it properly.

not sure about medic after certain age but don’t think so.
Couple next door are both a bit “doddery” but think they just sign to say they are fit, in fact the woman did it on line last year so there can’t be one. They are both around 80.

i just think its common sense i mean your reactions slow for an example and without sounding condesending your average 70year old will have seen cars change beyond anything i will. my point is that you should have a yearly half hour drive with say a local driving school who can say your safe for the road, you can pull away safely at roundabouts etc nothing that will cost loads of money but just an assesment to say your fit to drive.

It makes me laugh when you see them in top of the range Audis and beemers Porsche etc , and yo overtake them in a truck ■■ Put ya foot down for gods sake !!! I think there should be a minimum speed limit applied for some places

Without sounding condescending, many older drivers have enough knowledge, experience and road reading skills not to need fast reactions  Most younger drivers need their fast reactions to get them out of situations they should not have got into in the first place.

I agree that some elderly drivers should have their licence to drive reviewed or assessed, but I think every driver should have that at regular intervals anyway. Not practical or politically wise, but ideal given the number of not elderly drivers who seem very lacking in knowledge and skill.

I agree with Santa - people using superfluous apostrophes should be castrated, then nailed to a green-grocer’s window and have rotten fruit pushed into their orifices.

no that fine and yes your probably right i am sure for every doddering old git there are several good drivers but i think once you hit 70 things change and a quick yearly mot for the driver would be a good thing. i for one know of a driver round my way who takes about 5 mins to get out of his car and i have also been pulled into when in a 45ft 14ft high bright blue trailer by some old git who didnt see me but decided it would be a good idea to pull into wheel 1 and 3 of the tri axle trailer? luckily i had a witness who stopped as he was adamant that i was in the wrong for overtaking him.
