Some of these “so called” Logistics outfits won’t have rates as good as that nowadays Larry!! Cheers Dennis.
Which of you two former hauliers can tell me when the clearing houses started calling themselves Freight Forwarding ?
Cheers Dave.
I recognise most of those Clearing House names Larry,I used Starr Roadways Bilston once or twice in the 60s.
Well the firm I started working for in the 50s were a medium sized company , but their letter heads included Freight Forwarders, now I may be wrong, but I think it had something to do with shipping cos, when cargo was landed & the shipping co gave it to the haulier either carriage paid or carriage forward, which obviously meant the reciever paid the haulage charges ■■?> Regards Larry

IIRC Dave the term FF crept in as european and further destinations started to be served in earnest just the same way as the term Logistics replaced Haulage Contractor!! But as always the new descriptions looked better but the industry just kept on sinking as regards viability and bottom line returns!! Cheers Dennis.

Here’s a shot of one of our Euro fleet Dave,Benelux were FF’s out of Hull, they didn’t run any motors of their own.We had a couple of trailers running for them, they were ok to work for up to a point but they played their cards close to their chests at times!!! The trailer is coupled to a left ■■■■■■ Scania and is lettered as Convent who were a domestic West German haulier who also acted as FF’s throughout mainland europe. Now these German people were top notch to work with in every respect!! Cheers Dennis.
how about Trafford Park Transport? And R V Christian in Liverpool? George White at Purfleet Deep Wharf?

You’ve just jogged my memory here Chris,IIRC Howarth Bros. of Ingleton were involved with Ronnie Christian as “sleeping partners” I was led to believe.I don’t know what the final outcome was and I never met the bloke, but the Howarth lads used to often refer to Ronnie when I was in their company. cheers Dennis.
I realised that freight forwarding was a term used in shipping.,but just wondered when the term clearing houses was dropped and freight forwarding became the term used.
Nowadays you just see the big outfits advertising back-loads.
Cheers Dave…

Hiya Dave…I’d bet the change come about when instead of EX or older drivers used to route the transport(good old days)
these ex university upstarts with computers and degrees needed fancy names to inpress folk in the pub what job they had.
clearing house seems basic when you could be in a freight forwarding position…god what makes it very obvious i don’t
like the way transport is run nowadays
John

I never actually met him either, Dennis When I worked in Lightbody Street in Liverpool in the mid-80s, we used to palm a bit of work off to him when we couldn’t find a haulier direct, and Ron generally used to find someone. I remember the sign over his office wall, but never went in.
