Reference old Transport Cafeās about 45 years ago I used to do a regular run to Baxters of Speyside carrying agricultural
produce up and seed potatoes back. There used to be a transport cafe on the A96 made from an old railway carriage, the
guy who ran it was called Bert. I once got snowed in there for three days, I think he had a bungalow straight opposit that
served as digs. regards Big Al
Any of you guys remember the 24 hr cafe at Lemsford herts ? used to go there early morning on the way back from the London Markets ⦠a lot of guys from thorns used to get in there as well⦠excellent mixed Grill !!
You are correct about Toms Big Al Used to stop there mid to late 70s if there was nobody in the rooms He would leave us the key for wash room if we were cabbing it.

Going back a bit I know, but any Southampton lads remember the cafe between Ower and Romsey on the dual carriageway heading toward Romsey ?
Talking to an old mate last night, he reckoned it was the Jack OāLantern, ? probably long gone now, like the rest of them.
Hello Fergie 47
Yep , Jack O Lantern on the left on the old road half way up the hill towrds Romsey , at some time it had links with a Garage there selling and repairing cars but became a classy Thatched Restaurant . I had a BSA Rocket Gold star in the 80s that seized solid rght opposite .
Do you remember the little Cafe on the top of the Pepper Box on the left direction Sal;isbury , could just get parked up .

Frenchy,
I now remember that there was a garage as well. How time blanks the old memory box eh !
However, I DO remember taking your RGS, whilst you rode your 350 (or 500) BSA single to a classic bike show on the IOW one year back in the '80ās, so the old memory still works now and then .
I also remember the cafe at Pepperbox, and while we are in that area, the one on the Romsey to White Parish road on the left ? Belive its a close of houses now !

Hello Fergy 47
It Mightve been the Shooting Star you rode but if you were complaining of backache it wouldve deafinately been the RGS on clip ons .
Id forgotten the Cafe at White Parish , it was a cracking Cafe with good Parking , blowed if I can remember the name Though , wasnt that the old A27 .

Anyone remember the cafe at Bassetts Pole, used to be next door to Eric Watts haulage depot. Donāt know what it was called though. The pub was across the road on the T junction but the road layout has all been changed now. My brother used to be able to draw the pub from memory years ago, as he spent so much time sitting outside, in my dadās wagon, waiting for him to come out! last time I went by there the cafe was an American Diner or Mcdonalds, something strange like that.

āPoundstretcherā contract, what a job.Trailers with t/lift and pallet trucks,we were given hand-ball time to do job, tipped by Thursday lunch time, due back Leeds Friday late afternoon.Thatās why I moved to S.Wales!!!Lorry drivers disease too much spare time away from home!!!Park up Cardiff or Swansea centre then out on pull!!!
Eric Watts Haulage - thats a blast from the past!!
Whatever happened to them?
Ed
Packed it in years ago, think they may have owned the cafe at one time as well. I was told, a long time ago, he sold the land that the Belfry Golf Club was built on and if that was so I wouldnāt think he would have needed to mess about with wagons! The family had a farm and owned a lot of land along that stretch of road a few years back, but I donāt know if they are still there now. Perhaps some of the lads still in the Midlands will know.
Jacks Hill in Baldock on what was then the A! ā They used to spread butter on the bread with a shaving brush. Lots of āworking girlsā there too.
A great one was The Jungle at Shap just before the Leyland Clock on the old A6 ā all festooned with plastic flowers and fruit. I got snowed up for three days there in 63.
