Remember that stinky smelly portakabin type café in the lay-by just north of Worksop roundabout A1?
It caught fire and I heard the bloke who ran that took over the Quernhow café.

That’s correct “axletramp” IIRC He was called Mario, Regards Larry.
Interesting reading this thread although not read every page, so would think that on the A1 Norman,s at Brotherton has already been mentioned, then there was the Woodside I think at Micklefield and can,t remember but just south of there just by the A63 turn off there was a popular café.
Then there was the Robin Hood Café on the A614 between Nottingham and Ollerton is there still a café there?
Can remember the Tree,s on the A38 at Alwrewas used to go with my dad on night changeover there, and being a young lad usually got my meal for free.
Finally can anyone remember name of the pub café on the A66 on the drag up from Brough to Stainmore it was situated right on a 90 bend was always full when going past on nights this would be late 80,s I think building s still there but don,t know if it,s still open.

Im sorry about that I must be getting short of lamp oil
Regards Larry.
And I still think he was right Larry, it was The Trees. I often used to stop there in preferance to Oakamoor, which I didn’t rate as good.
The best cafe on the A 614 north of Nottingham was The Limes. A really great place which did proper roast dinners at lunchtime. Too close to home to check it in the evening. I have an idea it is still there. Hope so.
However, with the years creeping onwards, I do remember a cafe with hardly any parking at Whatstandwell, near Matlock. That had something to do with trees. Could I be confusing the 2? - surely not.

I think he was right about being the Trees Im getting mixed up with another café called the Cherry Tree but I cant rememeber were it was, I was in the Trees once or twice in the 60s but it was sometimes difficult to get parked because drivers used to to more space than they needed as you say it was better than the Oakamoor, Regards Larry.

Yeah - remember that one, too, Dave. And the little black and white cabin, right on the lights on the A6 at Cromford. Always had two or three tippers parked on the road outside.

Steve I well remember that cafe at Cromford and what a good place.I remember the police lads on training used to call there. Not been round there for a while is it still there.I suppose they couldn’t make much money now.
Going off the point a bit I used to do a lot of entertaining in the folk world and during the interval I had a cuppa. This was at West Brom. and the teapot had two spouts I wonder if anybody else has seen one

A great cafe that has closed in the last few years was the London House Hotel @ Kirkpatrick Fleming near Gretna.
They did a braising steak dinner to die for the steak just melted in your mouth and in the summer they did fantastic salads like the warm chicken salad with their own dressing.
And their breakfasts all freshly made and not an ounce of grease heaven, admittedly you paid a little more but at least afterwards it didn’t take all day for the allday breakfast to digest.Great memories good food, quiet parking and good company.
I stopped there last year whilst driving my car down to Preston and sad ly it was closed down, all the good cafe’s have now gone.
Wen i was doing a scotch run wen i was driving for Harris & Miners,i used the Loopway cafe at Forfar, just off the main dual carridgeway, always found a Robsons of Carlisle driver to chat too!
Another cafe i used was Strahcathro cafe on the left before Stonehaven,I think its still going! is it!!

Aged about 10 I remember calling in at the ‘Mayfield’ at Garstang on the old A6, with my Uncle Jack in his Leyland Beaver, BJM■■? Belonging to George C. Croasdale of Haverthwaite. Huge load of round timber on a pole trailer. I used to like to play the pinball machines. We’d be going to Riding & Anderton’s Seven Star Sawmill at Wigan. The Mayfield had a massive lorry park. When the song ‘The Weight’ by ‘The Band’ came out, with the opening lines
I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin’ about half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
“Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?”
He just grinned and shook my hand, “no” was all he saidI always imagined pulling onto the Mayfield!
Jack used to tell me that when he’d been driving a furniture van for my Dad, in the late forties he’d stopped, with his mate, Joe Backhouse?, at ‘Dirty ■■■■’s’ at Garstang. He’d been woken at 4am by Joe to say they were leaving. Joe kept his cigs and matches under his pillow. When he’d woken in the night and got up for a cig, the matches were so damp they wouldn’t strike!
No wonder that generation died so young?
Aye the Mayfield at Garstang, One of the goodns IMO I often stayed there, Clean as a whistle, A bit noisey at night but nowt to really bother anyone if they were tired, The grub was top notch too & loads of parking area, The good old long gone days of good cafes & digs, Regards Larry.
I used to stop in digs at Andrew Collinson"s at Brock,on A6,was ok,all the scotch drivers used it,Dirty ■■■■"s was before my time,i started driving in 1973,wen i was 21.!!

Hi anyone remember the Cafe at Penkridge on the A449 South of Stafford. It was very popular way back in time lol
Yes do you mean Sunset on A449,stopped there many times, they had strippers on in the Bar late at nite, lol,…I remember well coming back from scotch run in the 70s me & Alec both stopped there on Easter good friday nite,it was nearly empty,Norman Croad,Torquay…

You must be one of the newer fellas.
Nice memories there Norman.
There was a grand little cafe at Canvey Island, not far from LCOW and Texaco,it was run by two oldish ladies and was open on a saturday morning, lovely breakfast, just right to keep yer going home to Sheffield. That was in the days before the new road from Benfleet was put in.
Talking about the cafes on the A38 Burton by pass,I never knew the Tree at Alrewas as any other name but the Tree.It was better than the Oakamoor as mentioned. The Y-pass was always my first call, just before the Burton turn-off,I only used Airport once and that was enough.
Atkins at Findern was a real good place as well, but woe betide anybody who parked in their garage area round the back, the foreman would be on the phone to your gaffer like a shot, bad news if you were on a dodgy, like a mate of mine who was booked off at Tewkesbury…
