Old Cafe's

hi,
anyone remember the Boot and shoe on A1 south near LEEDS? used to deliver new cars to ‘Tates of Leeds’ ford dealers storage yard just near by,looked on google maps and can’t find any sign.

Tankerman:
Would the lads who owned Checkley be called Brash by any chance?
I stayed in the digs a few times in the early 70’s.
Anybody remember the other cafe on the cross roads nearer Derby, the names gone from my weary old head.

One bed to avoid was the Moss near Carlisle, I was kicked out bed at 6am one day to let a night man get in. Sheets never changed, At least they didn’t let him get in with me, then again I might have enjoyed it, I will never know and don’t wish to find out.

Are you talking about the salt box cracking cafe.

Salt Box was further toward Burton-o-T.
I believe you’re correct about the Checkley café being part of the Brash empire- John Brash had a fleet delivering timber (red ERFs?).

It was Barry Brash who ran the cafe, I think John was his son.

There was another cafe going towards Derby called The Silver Wheel, I seem to remember it wasn’t anything to write home about.

The Silver Wheel was on the A61 at Unstone, between Sheffield and Chesterfield Haddy. Never had any snap there but had plenty of dodgys.

started off as a mobile in a layby then the owner built a proper building on the site.

Hi.
Cafe at Stibbington ? A1. Used to call in there mid night 'ish,on the way home,70’s. A crowd from london,i thinmk it was Robinsons ?,half cab Fodens, did a change over there. It was rumoured ■■?, that some times a “Lady” would travel up with one of them, and while he had his break in the cafe, the “Lady”,would play the beast with two backs for money in the lorry park. Good Cafe those days, only trouble was launching yourself across the A1 to go north bound on a foggy night,it did seem to lay there in the winter,but…8-9-10… GO.

It would have been a bit cramped if she traveled up in a half-cab Foden wouldn’t it. Now you’ve mentioned “that sort of thing” I wonder if anyone one here remembers stories about the Haven Cafe on the A1 near Doncaster. Aparrently it was the stamping ground of a certain “lady” known as “The Haven Gobbler”. When I first started on distance work in the sixties I was told loads of stories from older drivers about “ladies of the night” in different parts of the country but “The Haven Gobbler” was the most famous. Perhaps she made herself redundant when the cafe closed down. Cheers Haddy.

The Cara Cafe
Caravan in a lay-by on the A57 outside Eccles Manchester near Barton air field sausage barms five bob 25p in to-days .
It was like Ancliff truck park/yard as well as BLT tanks .

Perhaps I’ve got the name wrong Chris, unless there are two Silver Wheels !!!

You are correct Haddy!

Hi Chrisboi
Remember the Boot & Shoe stopped there often when using the Ai cant remember if there was Digs there or not,.
not a bad stop,it was just past the Junction of the A63 for Leeds on the left going South.Google Maps show an old Building at South Milford not sure if thats it or not.

Ben.

Anyone remember the black horse cafe on the A30 just before Exeter? I had a night out there in the 70’s ,parking was a nightmare but the boss used to wake you with a cuppa then get your breakfast going-brilliant.Then there was a garage further down just by a place called Lewdown again on the A30 owned by a bloke called Graham,he later got a cafe between Taunton and Bridgewater.I remember when he got a microwave at Lewdown and we all thought it was a marvel

I am another who remembers the ‘Black Horse’, seem to remember it was 24 houre opening, used to cab it in (then) new D series Ford flatbed in the car park, no additional charge if you bought your meals there as I remember.

There was a 24 hour cafe at spark ford near wincanton called the frying pan I think. It had a large truck park and pumps I seem to recall. The black horse may well have been 24 hours

When you come off the dual carriageway westbound at Sparkford there is or was a petrol station and Little Chef with a large parking area on the left going up the long climb, that was the frying pan

Mandos tea van on the B4009 just outside Princes Risborough is a great one. A pair of Red Arrows pilots had time to stop there on Thursday.

Was it a flying visit ?..sorry couldn’t resist that corny one.

Hi.
I think the chap at the Silver Wheel derby had sad time,i was led to believe that his son,or some relative was travelling to open up/work there, and got killed in a bad smash, cannot vouch for that,so this is/was the reason why they lost interest. Never used it,it was to close to home, but heard he was an ok bloke, and the cafe was good.
