Old Cafe's

marshman:
I remember the West End. I was told by someone who was there, that when that place was demolished a huge hoard of rats was seen running away. I too wondered how many of us had shared digs in the past. Nowadays all they share is a layby.

hiya,
Yes and use the bushes for the toilet and sit in the cab watching tele,
unlike the old digs drivers talked and if a first time stopping place for
you a driver was always there to take/tell you where the decent pubs
or clubs were, no comeradarie now, glad I’m out of it. Oh’ I have had
the odd pee on the nearside of the motor but only en-route, so I’m no
way perfect.
thanks harry, long retired.

Well there was good & bad & very good & very very bad café,s, IMO One of the best ones was the Coatsgate at Beattock I use it quite a lot both for food & overnight stays, They even had a bungalow just along from the main café when it was fully booked, I first went in there in 1957/8, The food was fresh & well cooked & a good selection too, The last time I was there was the week it was being closed down owing to the compulsory purchase order to make way for the M 74, The same owners had it for over 40 years, I felt very sad at the time, But I thought to myself Ive just had a good breakfast & enjoyed it, Im sure there will be plenty of old drivers who can remember the Venison Stew, & the steak & egg dinners Eh, Long gone very happy days, Regards Larry.

You never saw a local driver in the West End. If the café wasn’t rough enough, the smell of the animal fat rendering works next door would soon put you off!

We used the New Ark by the Trent “doing Scotch” with new furniture. Odd place, the catering was in the cafe and the beds were in a house two doors up the side road. Used to be a place like that in Stoke, the Capesthorne Hotel, you ate in one house, watched TV next door but one, and the beds were in the next house.

Hullo Larry,
No mate the Hazelbush is long gone, late 80’s or very early 90’s. The Hazelbush Service Station is now a Fish and Chip Emporium, and the Hazelbush Cafe after being idle for a while, was opened as a Discount Bargain ? Store. Both are quite busy places nowadays, especially in the Tourist Season.

The West End can only be described as a s"^t hole from what I remember of it.

Great stuff Haddy , Keep them rolling, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry, looking at your posting of the digs/cafes cards brings back a few memories, I wonder how many of us on this site have had nights out together in the past !
I got digs at the “West End” at Gloucester one night but gave the place a wide berth after that. What a dump !!! Cheers Haddy.

Aye same here once was enough it was just a dosshouse as far as I was concerned, That was way back in 1963ish on my way down to Avonmouth I.C.I Regards Larry.

Without a doubt, the West End Gloucester was the proverbial shi*ehole.I walked in,took one look at the staff and the “rooms” - with bloody sacking up to the windows, bade my farewell and slept at Mrs Albions.

The Coatesgate with the revolving doors Larry. You could lose yer trailer in some of the pot holes on that park, but it was a grand place. I used to call on me way up and on me way down, dashing across the 74 when parked southbound.

Yes you’re right Larry, it was quite a Dash over the road when on the way home. That old quarry or whatever it had been was very handy. Good job they made a gap in the Barrier, it was quite a job trying to get your legover (pardon the expression) the Central Barrier. And as you say there were some deep old potholes in the Parking area. There was also a single diesel pump on the way up, behind the kitchen, as you drove in. What was it that they called the bloke, maybe you and Chris will remember, something like Peep Peep or Puff Puff. As you both say a real good place to stop at.

I cant remember the blokes name at all, But the same family had for 40 years or more, & the food was top notch IMO, Long gone happy days Eh, Regards Larry.

Three more from me

Aye the Quernhow another good watering hole, The founder ran it right to the end which was a long time, Then of course it was sold to its present owner, Ive only been in once since it changed hands & I wont be there again, Its changed completely , Regards Larry.

Riverside, parking area like a bog in winter and a dustbowl in summer and a load tester all the time.Food I found was not too bad,not been in for 15yrs though. The quernow, only used it when original owner had it,food good[trifle pricey]retired before it changed hands, just as well judging by some of the past comments on here.
regards dave.

When you think about how digs used to be it’s a miracle we ever lived to get old!

I remember one digs in Cheltenham where everybody had to share one toilet with a wash basin which had the biggest fungus, one of those flat-topped ones, growing from the corner. It was handy though because it gave you somewhere to put your razor and soap!

David

The last time I was in The Oakamoor at Barton under Needwood the toilets were terrible dirty & smelly, Mind that was way back in the 90s, It used to be very clean way back in the 50/60s days I stayed there a few times They even had an arrangement with some people along the road who had a bungalow & took drivers in for them when they were fully booked, Regards Larry.
