hiya,
Another great Greek cafe was at the Holloway “nick” end of York Way I can
still hear Anna shouting through the hatch to her hubby who I never ever
saw " this is in my best Greek" porkadachopa damasha and apeasa atwicea.
PS and there was always a chance of a bit of newly released “cab traffic” from
her Majesty’s nearby “hotel”
thanks harry, long retired.

Being one of the “Cab Gyppos” who used to park on The Bush, it was routine to have a cup of tea in that old railway carriage cafe that was parked there and after having a wash in that Portacabin with the crappy toilets next to that indoor tennis court we would walk through to The Green where there was a pub that did an early dinner. Steak, chips and peas with a dessert for about two quid and then we would walk to the far side of Shepherds Bush Green to The Shepherds Bush Hotel. There were usually at least four or five drivers who had met up, some regulars and some first timers and on occasions there might be as many as a dozen drivers from all over the country. After a couple of pints we usually had a walk around in the summer or in the winter the majority would probably go to the cinema next door which I think was called The Empire. Walking back to the lorries later that night usually involved having a kebab from a Greek take away or the Wimpey Bar if it was still open. Does that bring back any memories for anyone.

Here is a photo from the Manchester Archives of Joans Transport cafe in Gorton near the Clayton Aniline plant which was taken sometime in the sixties.

Regards Steve.

Steve,I’m sure that cafe was still open in early 1970 when I did my first delivery of toluene to Clayton Aniline.

Years ago on the old east lanc’s road they used to be many transport cafes, just like the A5, but I cannot for the love of it! :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: remember any names, thats when it would be a three day up to manchester.

I reckon that you lads spent a lot of time in cafes, in 20+ years of driving I only ever went into one and that was to use the loo! Having said that, judging by the state of them, I would dread to think what the kitchen was like. It was the Happy Hour at Bassetts Pole and what a mess, best thing they did was to do away with it. We did used to call at Sudbury Services occasionally though just for a cuppa when we were trying to kill time coming back from the M40 construction job though!

Pete.

Thats the thing with tippers Pete,we were to busy to stop at cafes.I did stop at the Don cafe, top of Glynneath pitch for a breakfast when I was fetching slag from Margam.Did also call in at Winforton and have an all day breakfast sometimes.
I also carried a box of sandwiches and two flasks.I only weighed 12.5 stone then.
Must of had worms.
Cheers Dave.

Aye Dave we were busy making the roads for these other lads to travel on! I always took sandwiches and a flask, just four slices of bread and cheese plus maybe a couple of biscuits, but when I ran into traffic I used to start eating them out of boredom unless I was running with someone and chatting on the cb! They had often all gone by 9 o clock and then I had to go hungry until I arrived home which on the tarmac job could be anytime o clock if the gangs were after overtime. Wonder I never got an ulcer.

Pete.

One of the cafes in Kidlington is now the Audi garage where the Oxford Road and Banbury Road merge. There’s a tea room called Annies’ in Thrupp, just outside Kidlington on the Banbury side; Has “Dirty Annies” been resurrected, I wonder?
