Old Cafe's

Hello Trev, I guessed you would know more, thanks. All we have left now I suppose is the Hollies, (not very good is it), Truckers Rest, (nice Tomatoes on toast), and the one at Four Ashes, where the little cycle riding Councillor, with the big ego, fought against them extending the lorry park. Why do these people think that Transport facilities are not required in their domain?? Cheerio for now.

I used to deliver into two places at Four Ashes on the A449 in the 70s but I can’t remember a cafe, where was it?

Hi Chris,
Its a few hundred yards passed the four ashes cross roads towards W-ton on the r/hand side. Its called the Farmhouse cafe and the district is Standeford. It was always a breakfast stop for us going north out of W-ton, it still gets packed with lorries on nights out.

So it would have been after that industrial estate then Trev, where Midland - Schnectady was,on the other side of the road,I remember it now, passing it as I went further down to tip at Good Years. :unamused:

Hello all, Chris, Trev, Harry, yes it was the Farmhouse Cafe, couldnt for the life of me remember the name! Nice clean and tidy, own quite a lot of land next to their lorry park, wished to extend into it, there is a definate need, but the "Regulatory Committee" of South Staffs Council took exception, ""its in the Greenbelt"" they declared! Yet their own Four Ashes Industrial estate, plus Schectady, and the rest of the clinical waste complex is over the road from it!!! Oh, and they are building a new Incinerator there as well! Lets just say they are incompetent, its kinder to them. Believe me it would not happen in Europe, but here, it is the norm.Cheerio for now, (Ive just been told Im getting like Victor Meldrew) that`s life!

The best cafe down the A5 IMO was The Jet at Clifton-upon- Dunsmore, run by the Turton family. My second choice was The Avairy south of Hinkley Knight.Bewick.

Yes I remember it good food and clean, I was only in once, I was loading tiles at Shawell Redlands Tiles in the 60s. Regards Larry

The Turton family, Mum & Dad, Ted, John, Ronnie, Maisie and Mick who won the pools in the late sixties and left the family business eventually ending up in New Zealand or Australia, and never bought the rest of the family a cup of tea.

The Jet was a regular stopping place for Suttons and many other St Helens based hauliers.

Any of you old drivers remember The Busy Bee Cafe Watford a bit up market I thought, the last time I was in there was 1960, it was clean, & well named allways busy, Im sure there was a film about wagons, and some of the scenes were shot there ?. Regards Larry

There was a scene from Alfie where Michael chatted up Julia Foster and took her from a driver who had given her a lift that was shot in the Busy Bee.

Indeed, and that driver was played by Sydney Tafler who later caught up with Alfie in his local and a big fight broke out while Queenie Watts carried on singing all the while dodgeing flying glasses and furniture…etc.

As you can see I am big fan of that film. :unamused:

To get back to the Busy Bee. Sydney had driven up in a white AEC Mandator of Davisons of Shildon and Alfie nabbed the delectable Julia by first loosening some of the ropes on the back of the sheeted load thus sending the driver outside after a ‘friendly’ tipoff.

hiya,
Trouble is “big gee” there’s too many packed lunch drivers out there now I suppose it’s a sign of the times, the prices some of the places ask is a bit cheeky though, and you can’t blame drivers who try to save a few bob by taking food with them from home I never did it but then cafe’s wasn’t charging astronomical prices for meals when I did the job.
thanks harry long retired.

hiya,
Having been out of the wage earning league for over ten years now i only know things seem expensive when and if I can find a drivers cafe that I used to use and that’s on the odd occasion I do a bit of distance in the old jam-jar to visit friends and family, but reading stuff on here and seeing jobs advertised the wages for most driving jobs seem very poor and some I’ve seen I wouldn’t get out of bed for my hourly rate when I chucked it ten years ago when working for a public company was in some cases better than some of today/s offerings.
thanks harry long retired.
