What was the cafe on the old rd coming into sutton bridge called. It was on the west side of sutton bridge just after lockwood foods. It was a white painted cottage with a coca cola m/c outside. You had to park in a long lay-by opposite.I think it was run by 2 sisters and their mum,the food was great and i preffered it to the farm cafe.
regards dave.
The cafe you are talking about is “Frankies” and as far as I know it is still running. I’ve been retired a while now but the last time I was in there it was ran by a couple from, I think, Yorkshire. Well worth coming off the Long Sutton/Sutton Bridge bypass for. I have a photo of it in my collection and when I get time I’ll post it on here. Regards Haddy, Gt. Yarmouth.

You beat me to it Haddy, although I was going to say ‘Franks’. Bit of a longshot to rely on though, if you travelled a long way looking forward to eating there, and then found the lay-by full.

Yes mate that was the only problem but must admit i nearly always managed to squeeze in.
regards dave.
A mate of mine asked me to post this one up as he was a friend of the sons owner, and use to spend many a summers holiday in and around the cafe, and still keeps in touch with his friend today.
It’s Radcliffe’s Transport Cafe on Kirkstall Rd, Leeds, and was very near the Craven dairy. The owner was George Radcliffe an ex army chef…a very busy place, with cracking food.
This would be the late '50’s - '60’s. Anyone remember the cafe,…
Another old cafe on the A129 The Ormonde Cafe I think, I was a couple of times in the 60s, when at Basildon I wonder if its still going ? Regards Larry.
Getting back to the Quayside cafes, Jimmy Galbraiths St Lawrence Cafe, closed down now, but was a very popular watering hole in its day, even when Jimmy retired, in fact I think it was better under the new owner . Albert Greenwood & Lofty Marshall used it as an office, I know Albert is not with us now, but does any one know if Lofties still about, ?Regards Larry.
I must have mentioned this already in the past 58 pages but, for the benefit of the newbies to the thread, one of the best for a night out stop was Twempies (or was it Tempies?) just opposite the dock gates at Berwick on Tweed.
We always used to park in the docks in the 80s and 90s and it was a really popular place to eat. The harrassed owner sold it to Margaret who was married to a night trunker and she was a really fierce lady but the meals were enormous and delicious.
I heard later that she had bought and moved into the undertakers next door to the gates for the extra space so desperately needed.
Anyone know if she, it, is still there? If I ever go that way again I would love to drop in and see.
Sadley to say the cafe you mention outside the dock gates at Berwick, is now a Chinese & a Fish & Chip Shop, cant remember the name sorry. Regards Larry

That’s very sad, I hope she retired rich rather than gave up the struggle.
Are lorries still alowed to park on the quay overnight?
Yes you can still park …But its £7.00.per night, unless you go in late , you might not have to pay, ■■?> The Pub is still there The Harrow, still busy as far I know. Regards Larry

Larry, I used to tip at a factory 2-3 times a week behind the St. Lawrence cafe and Spillers called British Engines (CMP ltd), is it still going or has it shut down like many engineering places? Always used to go in the cafe for my dinner, it was decent grub.
Some time back The Whitehouse Cafe at Sticklepath on the A30 was mentioned Okehampton, well ive just remembered another one The Four Winds Guest House just outside Okehampton dinned there once , I wonder if they a still going, it was a decent place as I recall, nice tea, & of course that makes all the difference to say the least, Regards Larry
Another old cafe comes to mind 60s era. The Bali something or other cant remember the last bit of the name, it was at Tewkesbury 15bob I think DB&B. close to a lorry park as I recall, they woke you up with a nice cup of tea, If my memmorie is right Im sure they were open 7,Days a week, you could even sleep there through the day, which sometimes suited me, when I was tramping. Regards Larry.
Here we are as promised Dafdave, a picture of Frankies on the old A17 at Long Sutton. Assuming it’s still open, well worth coming off the bypass for. It has been there donkeys years, way before my time. Cheers, Haddy.

Well done haddy thats the one mate, happy days.

The Red Lodge on the old A11 at Freckenham near Newmarket, pictured here, is still going strong and nobody can remember when it first opened but next door was another cafe called The Snug ran by a bloke called Nobby and his two sons Kenny and David. Many a good night was had in the bar at the back and occasionally Kenny would show a few “movies”. They sold out in the early '80s to the Happy Eater but it wasn’t open for very long and the building became offices.
A bit further along, in the Thetford direction, was yet another cafe called the Roadhouse, not as popular as the other two though. Regards to all, Haddy.
