I remember Arden House Liverpool , Used to stay there when i went with my dad in the school hols . A.One Transport. I think it was a Sally army hostel?
Hi
When in Liverpool,Vera Marsdens Seaforth rd Bootle/Arden house(FIRE HAZARD) and when the new Sally Army opened at Warrington, drove back to there, left the keys on the front wheel, and a lad would come from Hull swop trailers and go back in the night. By this time,“V” had rode off with a customer ,and stopping in L/pool often meant a walk home !!. Drove up on the sheets one night to stop them getting pinched,an old boy passing by said.“Your inviting the scallies to do some thing, leave em’ on the trailer,it will be safer.”,and it was.
Happy Happy days.

Here you are Hulltramper, the view today of where the cafe was under the bridge in Bristol. It was the Headlight Cafe and was in one of these houses up the steps from the road . A bit posher today.
Cheers Phil.
Great photo.
Hi all ,this nostalgic thread got me thinking about my tramping days with BRS in the 50s when nightly digs could be found anywhere near a bit of waste ground.
One that stands out for me was in Liverpool ,though it was the last town i wanted to find myself for the night .it was a hostel type -cant remember much about it now but a massive building i think with towers each end and a very large frontage and parking area on a main road near the docks rd ,the name Lewis comes to mind --can someone verify this or give a bit of local history, thanks toshboy
Hi Numbum. THAT’S The one !!!
Thanks so much, had many a night there, loading in Derby, run down to the Docks and tip,get in there and it was the perfect day. ‘63/64,went down already loaded one morning, told the mrs i would be back… waited, tea time they closed the boat for it to sail,i thought, off load into the shed, still make it home… "Tip you in the morning drive’. Went up to the Cafe-Headlight,asked him for a bed,and the loan of some soap and a towel, there was a big high counter in the cafe, with a glass front, the chaps wife,(A TRUE vision of loveliness) was busy cleaning up behind the counter,i was DEEP in thought watching, when this voice boomed in my ear… "I have lent you soap and a towel, but FORGET the WIFE
Thanks again for the photo,by golly it certainly brings back memories, great nights in there,i think there would be 5 or 6 of us up there some nights,i can still remember to this day, jokes flowing back and forth, till about 02.00 hrs,and my jaws aching with all the laughing, plus 4-5 PINTS earlier. And the horse hair biscuits to sleep on up in the attic/loft. ?Comfy as anything

That’s got to be “DAVID LEWIS” Toshboy, and the road it was on was probably Scotland Rd. Cheers Haddy.
Hi Numb bum,Transporter Man and Haddy.
Isn’t this the thread thats come alive, first the photo, then how the TV “Went!”,and Haddy helping toshboy. I was at the Bali Hi with,“Porky Ward”,BIG MAN ?not half. we were tipping at Tewksbury Cold storage.went into the cafe for the night,up to the counter, booked in and took knives and forks out of the tray, put them in the top pocket of our overalls and went to a table, there were already knives and forks set out, when he brought the dinner over,he pulled the knives and forks out of our pockets and said,“You two are already overfed,so your not getting two dinners here!”
Numb Bum,would love a copy of that photo of the old cafe,i am not to good with the computor, but will try and PM you. To all the other lads out there, keep the Cafe’s and stories coming, myself and “Skinny head” pulled into Stamford late one night,(Whats new) 4-5 lorries parked up,over to the pub opp.car park…Lion ■■,did LARGE pork chop dinners, went in the pub, empty, all in their cabs telly watching… Thats why it will never be the same again.

Hiya…remember the cafe on dock road liverpool. it was at the bottom of millars bridge turn left 2nd or 3 rd building down
the road next to HTS transport. the chap who run the place was called Ron. when you got your meal he made you sit on the
first table with a empty seat. he then introduced you to who ever was already sitting down. none of this sitting on your own
with a lap top and not speaking to anyone like they are a lesser person… as you say Hulltramper things will never be the same
again. the chap with the ERF would know just where he was going(already booked in) he would know which other drivers
would be at those digs that night. after dinner out for a pint…THEN a good brekky at maybe 7.30am before he rushed of to work.
Solatary driver…NO CHANCE.
John
Hi 3300 John.
You are NOT wrong
Now then 3300 John ? Has that anything to do with the DAF 3300 ? Barry Brough had the first one in the Quarry,we were all green with envy,up pipes “Wad” on the CB… "Lovely lorry barry looks magic… That A.T.I. on the front, know what it means ? Barry said. “NO”. By this time every one was listening,Wad comes back with. "
A ■■■■ Inside… They were and still are great mates, but that was how it was in those days, good blokes great banter, all for one,and one for ALL.

I’ve said this before John, but that is just how it is still in France these days. Another thing that reminds me of the old digs is strip washing in the evening or morning. The French aren’t a mucky lot, contrary to popular slurs, but the otherwise excellent and numerous routier restaurants often only have one or 2 showers. Many like me strip to the waist and wash at the bowls. Takes me right back that does to the old time digs.
Has anybody mentioned Riggend cafe? My memory is often faulty but I visualise a very large room with many beds in with hardly more than a foot or so between them. Not one of the best.
I remember one in Biggleswade sat in a big room full of drivers after a few bevvies,
the lady came in the room and said " Hands up who wants cocoa". It was like being
back at school. I still have a chuckle about it 50yrs later.

The David Lewis “Hotel”! Number one doss house in Liverpool. Luxury single bedrooms through-out, separated by a three-quarter height wooden partition. Opposite was an area of abandoned land which looked like it had been a wartime bombsite in better days. Within seconds of parking, along came the usual half dozen young scallies asking for half a crown to “mind yer motor, mister”? It was a cheap alternative to explaining to your depot manager why you hadn’t spent the night at the local depot and subsequently returned to base with smashed headlights and missing bulbs & lenses.
Luckily I’ve never had trouble sleeping as I gather the coughs, snores and moans of the regular residents kept a good many others awake most of the night.
Of about the same quality, though somewhat cleaner, was the Sally Arms at St. Helens. Beds were arranged in rows in large dormitories with about three feet between them and it was just as well to sleep with one hand clamped around the handle of your suitcase!

Hi ROF. Well thanks for that,it brings back memories although do not remember details of the sleeping arrangements a lovely old building though Yes there was certainly some poor digs around but we soon found the best ones as experience was gained , but we had some good times with blokes that we never met before -was it called camaradi or something that is missing today,
Hi Spardo toshboy.
Comeraderie, yes. Back to wash and brush up. Was it “Little Johns” somewhere between p.boro-cambridge ? You went out into the yard,to a shed, there was an old boiler type/ washing machine thingy with constant hot water in one corner, a shelf around three sides, and a stack of wash bowls, you dunked your bowl in the machine, got your hot water, went to a spare place on the shelf and had a sluice down. I think they use it now as part,“Special Forces” training
.As i have said on other posts,When cabs were wood, and drivers steel"
