The very first vehicle I drove aged about 8 was an RT at North Weald Airshow, you paid a pound and drove it 100 yards or so, round the corner and back again. Pretty cool stuff.
Delivered an exchange generator there a few weeks ago to the flying club. Watched a Chinook practicing evasive landing/take-offs, had a look at a pair of what I think are Douglas DC3s ( (the tailfins are just visible above the hedge by the s/b hard shoulder of the M11), and had a good nosey at some old Russian single engined planes that are still regularly flown, while I was waiting to transship a load from a subbie. We spent the night on the airfield parked where the Norwegian airforce were stationed during WW2, slit trenches and all. They have some original WW2 wooden huts which are decked-out in period style as a canteen and a refurbed nissan (sp?) hut set up as a bar. Me and said subbie had a beer in the company of the local motorbike club. Had an entertaining evening in good company, most of whom were over 60 years’ old!! I’ll be 50 in a few weeks and I reckon I was the youngest in the hut!
Another interesting day and the main reason why I love the hiab work. Always something different.
They are a pair of DC6’s similar to the DC4 (DC3’s are twin engine taildraggers) they were rumoured to have been bought by a film company who were going to take them back to the States a few years ago. Obviously never got of the ground (as it were)
And another bit of trivia for you, that big hangar that they are parked behind is where they filmed the TV programme “Crystal Maze”

Totally agree, I’ve been saying that for years.
Best thing that could happen to that ‘Dirthole’ is for the Woolwich Barrier to break, then let all the Filthy Seawater in, then the barrier could work again, for half an hour only to break again & get stuck for the next 15 years (I’ll be retired then
) Trapping all the Dirty Seawater & Sewage, drowning all the Rats & rendering the place useless.
Or just Nuke it
Vote for the Estuary Airport then… Part of the clearance programme that’ll follow is for engineers to remove the SS Montgomery which we all get told would “go off like a nuke” if it went…
Yet no one even around here talks about these disasters that took place in the medway estuary about a mile from where I live, nor the numerous U boats sunk in the mud there…
HMS Bulwark I believe is still recorded as the “biggest UK explosion ever” 100 years ago this november, with the Princess Irene explosion also occuring in the same area the following year.
RIP all those blokes just doing a job, and getting killed in the process.
Just in case anyone is interested and being a bit pedantic
it is the wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery
Just saying like
We were always told if it blows up it will eradicate the Isle of Sheppy in a tidal wave, still waiting in eager anticipation

A long time ago, I worked for Royal Mail on Waterloo station, and I still really miss Hyde Park corner at 3pm.
Joining it was the closest thing to a Le Mans style start I ever experienced!
Having lived (or should I say existed) in the charming and salubrious haven of S.London, I would like to take this opportunity to enthusiastically endorse martinviking`s proposition on this thread regarding the urban regeneration of our cruddy capital.

Erm… It does actually say that on the pic… You can’t be thinking that was supposed to be Bulwark, when there wasn’t a piece left of it larger than a corn flake…

Tailgate any of the half dozen buses squeezed around you to get out into the roundabout…
Where did you end up going when lower road closed? - Liverpool street, or 9elms?
I used to run up there in the 90’s.
The test route for my class one included Marble Arch, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner and Victoria.

Mercifully, I used to come in from Croydon area ( Streatham High Rd, Brixton Hill, Kennington Road then past Lambeth North Station etc etc - if my memory serves me right!), so wasn`t really affected. Used to catch the corner regularly though, running to BBC Maida Vale then a few drops around Kilburn. Absolutely manic!!

Talk about baptism of fire. Did my class 2 around Norwich - tame by comparison!
Took my class d in Norwich, that was worse I think,
