Only ever had one fail mid-discharge on me, otherwise I think they do the job fine.
That said ,we seem to be seeing the new 57 plate units coming in fitted with PTO’s and being twinned up with donkeyless( is that even a word ?! ) tankers

i would imagine the hoyer job in northampton would be be on the tate and lyle contract, dont know a lot about it as i was on red fleet (chemicals) remember one bloke who came over from t+l contract. he was working out of lymm truckstop and the job was mainly running up to scotland doing trailer swaps, or norhampton/slivertown again on trailer swaps. on the bright side you wont have the donkeys in huddersfield who use to plan me!.. as for noberts, we often load at the same places (ineos at runcorn/barry), loading pvc powder which is a doddle to tip just keep your windows closed when loading! never heard any of the nobert drivers complain about the job…sorry cant be more help mate.
Thanks wirralpete and dieseldave good info. Am waiting to see what comes back from NDs if anything. From all accounts they seem to be ok no one I know really has anything bad to say about em. They seem to be an honest company but maybe not the best payers. I’ve got mates working for various dutch / belgian outfits they seem to want blood especially van den bosch but I suppose it depends on what you want you can’t really knock it if it suits the person. Cheers again and any more info gratefully received.
Shade sorry I don’t really have a problem with the donkeys unless theyre shi##ing on the beach when i’m in me deckchair youve probably gathered that I do / did work for your lot at another depot. Maybe the maintenance better at your end. Some of the heaps i’ve used are noisy dirty and well past their prime bit like me really but then again I suppose if youve got a cr#p unit with a useless blower that’d be no good either.

i now work for a german company mate the work can be long, btbh they are a lot easier to work for than some big uk outfits i worked for. oh and the trucks not a scania double bonus…lol
A lot of customers will supply landbased blowers if there is any local noise restrictions on the factory. hygiene was aleady mentioned, most modern silos are geared up with electric tipper motors so the truck engines do not need to be run at all.
We were recently offered work from Cemex back to the midlands from wales but when we told them we only run tipping tanks they said sorry H&S says no tippers A couple of the drops were literally 5 mins from our yard. On our Feldbinder tank with a diesel donkey blower we can get 29 tonnes on being pulled by Renault Premium
There is almost nothing commonly carried as a bulk powder which is covered by ADR. I did 4 years as a OD for EBT/ Schmidt in late 90s; out of 800 powder tanks on the fleet 6 had ADR certificates, all based in Germany. Weight again being an issue, where a standard 60m3 silo tank is ali and weighs around 7250kg, an ADR tank has to be mild steel, to prevent it splitting should it fall over when tipped, this puts the tare up to closer to 9500kg.
Whilst very little comes under the scope of ADR, it is true that some products become highly explosive if blown with air; terephthalic acid powder being a common example, it is used in acryllic paint. When this is the case you blow with Nitrogen, rather than with the tanker compressor. The thing I could never understand was that you are left with a tank full of nitrogen to take to the tank wash but because this is a residue rather than the load it doesn’t come under ADR.
Talking of heaviest product, that was Iron Carbonate, used to take it from St. Malo to Aberdeen, middle lid, 47 seconds gave you 23.5t; when you looked in the tank there was about 3 barrow fulls. The guys at St. Malo said that if you got a shovel full, two men couldn’t move it. It took forever to blow!
