Noobie question

My first time out in snow and ice later and I just wanted to ask…

Bogie wheels up or down when freighted? What are the consequences of having them up? I expect to have around 30 tonnes on

Ta

With a 30-tonne payload you’re not going to have any choice in the matter, as you’ll be right on 44-tonnes (assuming you’re even still legal). Unless your truck has been modified, then it will drop the axle at the slightest hint of a decent load.

Raise the axle if you need traction to pull away etc, but other than that you’re going to be stuck with it down as the truck will automatically drop it shortly afterwards.

I meant 30 tonnes off the weighbridge, not 30 tonnes on, sorry!

I still reckon the truck will drop the axle whether you want it or not at that weight, mine would.

Just take it slow, and lift the axle when you need a bit of extra traction on the drive axle.

You should have sufficient traction at that weight.

Also, at that weight you would be unable to “lift” the axle. You should have a switch/button to “dump” the air from the lift axle for a short while to give you more weight on the drive axle.

Some trucks have a load transfer button which will take the weight from the mid axle and transfer it to the driven axle briefly to help with traction, it’s that button that you don’t know what it does but looks like the midlift button.

There was a good thread about driving in snow on here a few months back do a search and you should find it.
