Maybe he just couldn’t drive then. I followed him for a long time and he was having a job to get it along, the couple of times he had to stop he struggled to get it away again.

I thought MGW prohibited vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 18 tonnes regardless of the weight of the vehicle at the time

Kerbdog:
If he is empty then he is legal. 18t MAXIMUM GROSS WEIGHT

only if it’s plated at 18t and i doubt it is.

an artic with a gvw of 44t still has a gvw of 44t when it tips the scales empty at 14t, part loaded at 32t or fully loaded at 44t

That’s how I always understood it, we have a quarry a bit further down the road and we don’t use that bridge. He got into Witney and went onto the A40, he was just saving time It’s a long way to go around, the camera flashed him anyway so he may be putting his hand in his pocket soon.

Maximum Gross Weight is the plated weight of your vehicle therefore he would have been illegal.

(Nothing New there then   )

You can go through a weight limit which says only the maximum weight allowed eg 10t or you can go through a maximum axle weight if your axle weights are below the specified limit.

M.G.W limits were introduced to make it easier for everyone to understand (apparently) so that as a driver you should know the maximum weight of your truck and therefore know instantly whether you could pass through the weight limit or not, as would the enforcement authorities. With the older signs it was not always easy to tell unless the vehicle was weighed.

Many of the wagons brought into Gill Mill quarry by VOSA have been nabbed crossing Newbridge. Regarding the 18t mgw arguement; I can see why we have to endure the DCPC judging from the number of professional drivers on here who don’t understand what Maximum Gross Weight means… :unamused:

You have to make exceptions for Scania drivers.

The road in question was meant to have had a 7.5t mgw limit on it but the bus companies threatened to put up fares (quite right if they have to use more, smaller buses) so the 18t mgw limit was used. I’ve heard that Trading Standards don’t bother fining farmers who cross with tractor/trailers clearly way over 18t though :unamused:

Yeah I’ll give you that one  but if I chuck ■■■■ all over the road, run overloaded, have no back lights or indicators, I get done, but the farmer trundles on causing danger to other road users, and his magistrate boss/ best mate makes sure he gets away with it. :unamused:
