Congratulations. You’ve had your say. Unfortunately your attitude on this thread has made cyclists just that little bit more vulnerable. Because now I care just that little bit less!

Many of the cycle lanes are pointless, not wide enough for the bike and cars to pass safely. And why would anyone think that putting buses and cyclists in the same lane is a good idea?
Agree with the first part, but while a bus lane can’t really be considerd a cycle lane they are normally the only cycle lane that i find it benificial to use in towns as they are normally empty sections of tarmac, pedestrians sometimes look before stepping out on them, sompthing most don’t do with just cycle lanes, and i normalyl find i am traveling at the same speed or faster then a bus in town so they dont normally need to overtake

Myself and ten co-workers will be riding John o Groats -Lands End 900miles approx for Help for Hero’s. We will have lights, hi-viz support vehicle etc but unfortunately we will be using A roads.cycle paths ideal for a family or nervous riders, but not for high end carbon race bikes doing 20mph, if you have 100miles a day to ride do you think dismounting every junction at pelican crossings etc is viable,
same points being discussed.
How come these sponsored rides don’t use B and minor roads? Not complaining, just a question.
Reading this thread it becomes obvious that the needs of cyclists will never be met. The word compromise just doesn’t figure in their vocabulary.

They use the A1 in South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire for time trials on summer Saturday evenings.

Too predictably childish!
They must be forced to wear HI VIZ GEAR HEAD TO TOE.Lights that stay on all day and not those stupid mini flashing things large ones that can be seen. There would be more cyclists killed and injured if it were not for the skill of HGV DRIVERS.

I find the needs of cyclists are met very well as do most, use of the road just like everyother person/vehicle and having to follow the same set of rules as every other person/vehicle no compromise nececcary
And im getting rather fed up of commenting on this thread so i think this will be the last one

I would imagine a good few lives have been saved by someone else doing their thinking for them.

Best to concede when you are losing the argument, bow out gracefully. Goodnight and happy pedaling.

A cyclist has annoyed you yesterday, now you hate all cyclists, childish!
Re-read this thread and see all the name calling, yes thats right its was you, childish!
If I started a thread saying a trucker once cut me up on the M6 I now hate all truckers , would I sound childish
There is no argument to loose really, I am not campaining for anything and am quite happy with the state of affairs I am mearly presenting some facts and oppinions as they are, people are replying wtih mindless drivel revolving around them getting held up for 10 seconds here and there
With a few good points thrown in, yes we know there are some cyclists out there who need to stop and think for a minuite, there are also many more truck bus and car drivers as well as pedestrians who could really do with some common sense,

I’m fine then I use my work issue hi viz coat or vest depending on weather plus my hi viz trousers. I have the flashing lights snd the front one in particular is so bright I point it toward the road slightly so it doesn’t dazzle. I think flashing ones are better as they draw more attention to you.

Precisely where have I said I hate all cyclists? I didn’t even say the cyclist annoyed me; I commented on the stupidity of his actions.
And what name calling are you referring to exactly?
Are you reading the same thread that I am? It would appear not. I repeat, your comments are too predictably childish to be taken seriously.

You commented on his stupid actions, and pretty much every cyclist on this thread agreed with you but your to blinkered to see that.
Post 29 you resorted to childish name calling
Just because myself and another poster dare to mention why a cyclist may not have been using a cyclepath you got a little anti.
please re-read
It appears EastAnglianTrucker has edited the origanal opening post which he worte yesterday 29hrs from the original post , I think his agrument is getting mighty flawed.

Why shouldn’t cyclists stop or dismount at junctions, you are just a lazy pedestrian and don’t pay anything towards these cycle paths or roads, you don’t carry compulsory third party insurance or buy vehicle excise duty, until you do, you don’t really have a say!
Owner of a rather nice Specialized Sirrus HybridNearly all cyclists are coverd while out on the road by 3rd party insurance either by purchasing specilist insurance from the like of british cycling or CTC etc, and househould insurance policies also provide 3rd party coverd when your out and about for acticities such as cycling.
There is no such things as road tax in the UK there is vehicle or car tax, that is based on emmisions (with allot of low immision cars beig exempt so if figures that cyclists should also be exempt on the groudns on emissions). Vehicle tax has nothing to do with maintaing road ways. Roads are maintaned using local authority money, also all the revenu collected from road tax anually goes no were near covering the anual maintinace bill for motorways witch cyclist don’t use anyway.
So cyclist make as much as a contribution to the roads as any car drivers from income tax, VAT, council tax etc
Oh and i would say nearly all cyclists pay road tax on one or two cars aswell.
I have edited my post for mr Pedantic, you knew what I meant, so it alters nothing, all the collected revenue goes into the government coffers, so indirectly vehicle excise duty does pay for cycle paths and roads.
Should we suggest a £10 charge for an individually numbered hi viz vest or helmet, so we can identify the pillocks. It shouldn’t upset you if you are so perfect.
If car and lorry drivers had fitted cameras and enough time to upload stupid videos to youtube, you would see how many pricks ride cycles, two abreast, no lights, coming under the blindspots, riding on pavements even after complaining how slippery they are.
Typical push-bike users.
A444 Burton, one side has many terraced houses with no garden and entries straight onto the footpath, the other side has a few fields and every house has a drive where pedaling Pete could see anyone walking out, or they have a chance of seeing the ILLEGAL cyclist on the pavement before he hits them.
Guess which side of the street the morons decide to use the pavement on…
Every cyclist who actually uses the roads without lights at night, deserves anything that happens to him. They go slower than most vehicles and therefore will get overtaken more, surely it is in their own safe interests to make sure they are visible. Personally, I think the police should do a nationwide swoop one week and every bike without lights should be confiscated and crushed to drive the message home.
3rd and final point. Every year, cyclists get killed on the A38 trunk road between Derby and Lichfield doing time trials. Why are they allowed to race on the road? More to the point, why would they want to?
Now having got that off my chest, I do also see a lot of sensible cyclists about.Lights, hi-viz etc.

The fact that it may indirectly cover such things does not present a valid case for cyclists having to pay it, especially as currently VED is based largely on emissions so by default cycles would be exempt anyway along with many cars
And why you think £10 a day is justifiable is anyone’s guess that would add up to £3650 a year higher than any other vehicle
Cyclists do not have to carry insurance as they are deemed a very low risk to other road users and the cost of administrating and enforcing such a scheme would end up costing everyone many more times what any damages would cost hence it is a non starter.
I imagine there are many cyclists doing daft things such as riding with no lights and dark clothing (riding two abreast is not illegal and in allot of cases is far safer as it makes cyclists more visible to other road users) and part of the reason for cyclists coming up the inside of trucks is due to poorly though out cycle lanes encouraging such an action
While I don’t condone it at all one of Luke’s blogs did infract point out that there are no blind spots on trucks and good drivers should always check all the mirrors although again I would not encourage anyone to ride up the inside of a HGV however there is very little training available to cyclists and very few people are born with the knowledge of “blind spots”, or rather areas that require a little more attention to check, on HGVs hence why they are fitted with mirrors witch drivers are taught to use any way back to the point on the road both on a bike and in the car (and hopefully soon in a truck) I see allot of cyclists doing stupid things I also see allot of pedestrians doing stupid things and also car/van/HGV drivers all of who should know better. The cyclists doing stupid things are normally in the minority compared to the number of cars and other vehicle being driven poorly and they are the ones who should know better as they have to receive training and pass a test to use the road.
I would be perfectly happy for anyone to identify me on a bike as I have allot of respect for other road users and always ride with consideration for mine and other peoples safety
I do not see the point in this thread suggesting that all cyclists are behaving in such a manner and I certainly don’t see why you should condone actual bodily harm toward a cyclist for doing something slightly silly.

I don’t normally support timetrialing on buisy roads and think the rules need to be looked at
Although saying every year someone gets killed is untrue i think there has been one person killed, a 15 year old boy IIRC a coupld of years ago when a female driver overtook him then veared left down a slip road before she was compleatly past
These races are held with police permission and under strict risk assesments
However the UK is one of very few contries where races can be held on open roads, In every other contry they simply close the road.
