No more honeymoon period for EV owners

I’ve only ever seen one place that displays the kWh price with signs as big as petrol/diesel prices for fast chargers & that’s Rivington services on the M61.

The vast majority don’t & some don’t even show it on the charger until you’ve started the charge.

“Which?” are an organisation that I trust a lot. They tend to ask the correct questions. Lots of general info here, and even more detail for members. Should I buy an electric car? The pros and cons of EVs in 2025 - Which?

I’ve seen they do it at Gloucester services, but that has been the only one I have spotted with a big sign akin to a filling station.

To my knowledge, ev charging isn’t regulated like weights and measures keep fuel stations in check, so potentially a bit ‘wild west’.

In addition how you pay affects the price. Some charge points don’t take card payments, but may take rfid payment cards, allstar have an ev card.

All can be paid for through their own app, but I can pay for a charge in the shell app at some non shell charge points and pay a different (higher) rate to if I paid in their own app, or have to pay a connection fee.

Yeah. My car requirements these days means I don’t have to use them, I’ve got around 190 miles range in the MG ZS EV, that’s waaaaay more miles than I’ll ever do in one day. I read that they will all have to have contactless payment before long. One reason I don’t use them is the extortionate prices. That Octopus Electroverse card is accepted at most public chargers & a few people I know use them everywhere with no trouble, they just add it onto your electricity bill.

I got one when Octopus energy was our supplier & never used it, but we had a nightmare with them wanting absurdly high monthly bills, in the end it turned out to be the first gen smart meter that went stupid so we went over to British Gas.

What is generally true of ev public chargers, Tesla ones perhaps the one exception I can think of, is the other firms involved have pricing that doesn’t fluctuate with location, so unlike say 6 BP stations up the A1 having different prices for Derv as you travel along, all their chargers are priced the same.

I think its sometimes the case for rapid chargers, that if the grid power connection isn’t particularly great, with most chargers in use at once you may all get slower charging than you could otherwise expect. But probably to the tune of it taking an extra 10 or 15min, rather than losing an hour!
