No I'm not using my mobile phone for your benefit

LIBERTY_GUY:
A phone contract is of no real benefit to me as don’t use the phone enough to justify one. In the winter months when agency work dries up, I would still be paying out monthly for it? It is only the odd ■■■■ end client that has unrealistic expectations.

Thats like saying you wont buy Steel toe boots coz you wont wear them outside of work. You buy them because you need them to do your job. If you need a mobile to do your job it then becomes a necessity. My phone and contract is a vital commodity of my job, if not least for me personal entertainment when on the road. I have a cab phone and still use my mobile at times. But my calls are free as part of a contract.

Jobs evolve all the time. If you need a phone contract to make it cheaper to do your job then get one. Get a rolling one so when the work dries up you can cancel. There are lots of logical, sensible options available. You just seem more intent on whining about 30p calls you cant get reimbursed. EVOLVE!!

I got my younger brother a sim only contract before he went to uni,
Capped at £7.50pm
500 mins
500 texts
1gb internet
Hardly breaking the bank to sort out the issue, add an extra hour on your time sheet every month if it bothers you that much.

Amazing, absolutely amazing.

Words almost fail me, there’s attitude and there’s doing your very best to make sure you’re unemployable for the better companies, the huffy stuff-you unhelpful to the nth degree attitudes portrayed here are the perfect examples of why the best full time jobs are now almost exclusively filled by recommendation and walk ins that can string a coherent sentence together.

Keep it up chaps, its gems like this thread that ensure our good full time jobs stay that way.

The law is that your employer must pay for PPE therefore you don’t need to buy your own steel toecapped boots under any circumstances.
Also I would say that if an employer requires you to call them, then they must supply the means to do it?
If you get to a job and they tell you to call them after every job ask them for a phone to do it with, if they tell you to use your own, tell them its broken.

Thats exactly the point though. You would rather lie to simply be awkward than get the ■■■■■■■ job done. You should be genuinely embarrassed by what you just said.

And I’m not sure because I’ve never been one. But who buys steel toe capped boots for agency drivers?

So what you’re saying is “Bend over chaps and spread your cheeks at least you can get a bit above minimum wage as long as you’re willing to fork out a bit of your own money to get it”
Its people like you that are keeping the wages and conditions down in driving as a job.

The health and safety at work act states that all PPE must be paid for by the employer so its kind of law? But I realise that a lot of agency drivers don’t want to rock the boat and maybe not get work because they insist on their rights, but do you honestly think its right that this happens?
If you have never worked for an agency then I hope to hell that the company you work for has supplied you with PPE, because if not, you are working for a company that breaks the law and if they are happy to do that then maybe they want you to break other laws as well.
But the point is that your phone is your own property and if a company requires you to make phonecalls on their behalf then they should supply you with the equipment to do it.

Brilliant, reel 'em in.

Actually because my employer appreciates and employs people who get the job done and keep the customer (who is the most important person by a country mile where i work) happy, they pay us far in excess of minimum or agency wages, to the point where a proper mobile phone contract with unlimited calls is easily afforded.
They also supply unlocked phones for company and reasonable private use (which i’ve taken advantage of when i’ve left me headset or similar at home), but sometimes my own phone network and my own headset does the job better so i’ll use that instead, yes amazingly it costs me nothing, what’s the big deal.

We’re a properly unionised company but thankfully enjoy a decent give and take relationship with management which benefits everyone, you enjoy your trip back to the land of red robbo and see exactly where your negative attitude gets you.

I absolutely agree with you that if you work for a give and take company you should do all you can to keep the status quo and look after your job and your customers. But if as the original poster has stated the company you are working for is taking the ■■■■, then maybe a bit of push back is the only way of improving your conditions.
In the driving community a good and fair job is a rare thing and if you get one then hang on to it, but there are a lot of companies out there getting the max out of their drivers for rubbish conditions.
I congratulate you for having a great job, but please remember, a lot of trucknet members are being screwed over and need to fight back for their own pride.

There is evolution and there is pee taking. The boots are my own property and there for my own use, as is my phone. Unfortunately am not one of these sad individuals that feels the need to bend over backwards for a single day’s work with a totally unreasonable client and certainly not paying for the privilege out my own pocket.

My phone is on the 02 network as the coverage from other providers is too sporadic, including in the countryside area that I live in. There are no sensible monthly bolt ons with them as they all for data or picture messages. What some of you employed guys fail to grasp, is that agency work is sporadic at times and in extreme cases you can have weeks without any suitable contracts coming up (contrary to what some may claim on here).

I do a good job for the people I do temps contracts for. I look after the vehicles, make sure the load in delivered in good order and ensure the customers are kept happy. That doesn’t mean I let the client try to walk all over me though, why on earth would I?

Try gifgaf even on pay as you go it’s 10ppm and 6p per text even cheaper with the sim only deals from £5 and it uses the 02 network

Talking of phones, how can you find out what the pairing code is for a Daf truck to setup hands free? When I had a demonstrator the other week I wanted to use the facility but didn’t know the code.

Three networks’ 321 deal (3p/min, 2p/text 1p/mb of data) is a PAYG deal.
I have one as my spare sim for when my voda runs out of data (regularly at the moment).
The 3 sim also doubles up as a holiday sim allowing 3’s feel at home feature.
So anyone paying 30p/min and moaning about it has no excuse not to change networks.

You are a lone worker at the end of the day,and a means of communication should be provided. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

hse.gov.uk/toolbox/workers/lone.htm

IMO an employer should provide you with any equipment needed to complete the job. You wouldn’t be expected to provide your own truck and fuel would you?
If you are required do ring the office after a drop, you should be provided with the means to do so. Either provided with a phone or reimbursed the cost.
Well done you for sticking up for yourself.

Yup 0000 usually does the trick I’ve found
