Gardun, funny you should mention horses. My grandfather was a driver but packed it in when they got rid of the horse and cart. He drove a horse and cart on the Somme in WW1. Never did get a driving licence not even for a car.

Listen, you know nothing muckles compared to me. I drove the first truck (a Ford) down the very first motorway that opened in the UK which was in December 1958 and it was the Preston by-pass, now more commonly known as part of the M6. There were no speed limits on motorways in them days. Speed limits didn’t come in until the late 60s.When I used to do Leeds to London there was no M1 then. Oh no, you had to go down what’s now the old London Rd, through Leicester centre and all that. I remember the M1 being built. It started at the A41 junction at Berrygrove and went to near Crick. It was opened late '59 by the then Transport Minister, Ernie Maples.
You youngsters don’t know you’re born, what with motorways, power-steering on trucks, synchro boxes, curtain siders, pallets!, night heaters, satnav etc. There were none of that when I was a nipper, allsithee.
dafdave By eck gardun you brought a few memorys back.I remember the m6 opening 2 lanes concrete surface went as far as lancaster. Also the m6 finishing at j12gailey island and having to go down the a5 to join the m1 at crick.
When I started you had to stop to feed the horse every hour and they hadn’t even invented punctures

‘How long were you at sea, 5 years?, huh, spent more time on a wave’
You haven’t been stuck in the drifts on Shapp
Rob K Hate to mention it to one of your boundless experience but I think you will find that Shap only has one ‘p’ - at least it did when I used to use it
Brings back memorys of the jungle cafe in 1970 and going past the leyland clock. Anyone remember the name of the fridge firm that used to run in convoy from aberdeen overnight, they used to come down shap like madmen?

Well I couldn’t even see the signs, what with the drifts covering them all up!
dafdave Did I read somewhere that the Leyland clock is still there? RobK probably missed that as well buried under the same drift
I do remember those fridges but can’t get the name. Red Albions?
david
