New starts - fridge?

the thing is this, you can do all the research you like, and speak to as many companies as you like, but sooner or later, like all business ventures, you’ve got to take a GAMBLE,

That is very true and I know if I had listened to all the doubters when I was starting i wouldn’t have taken the gamble. I didn’t listen and did take a chance. However there still needs to be some research before the gamble is made and judging by some of the questions he has asked, this guy isn’t anywhere close to the gamble stage yet.

i hear what your saying mate but does anyone who starts out really know what work their gona be doing in six months time? i know i don’t, even now!
you know as well as i do that the best work dosn’t full into your lap, it’s takes a bit of time to get yourself known and also to sus out what a decent rate is, only then can you pick n choose what your wagons gona be doing but if you don’t get into the job one way or another you’ll never know.

All true, especially the bit about best work. But questions such as how many miles or what rate etc makes me think he is far from ready to take the plunge. Having said that I don’t knock him for trying and wish him all the best in his endeavours, I just think he needs a bit more knowledge before he risks a lot of cash.

Dave, I think it is quite commendable, the way you have gone about your preparation for setting up on your own.

So do I. Many would have cut every corner & spared every expense possible.

Incidentally, Kirkham test centre is just down the road from me.

Thanks guys for your point of view and expirience.
I will do more reaserch ( anyway - what I can do while waiting for result from TC). But from all answers what I have read, I think that takes some traction contract for a few weeks to pull out trailers of somebody else and keep eyes open isn’t bad idea. What do you think?

David

In general, most people starting up as an od rarely have great paying work to begin with and like you say, you can start on low paying traction work and then keep your eyes open for an opportunity and with a bit of luck you will land on something that pays well, or you might not and that’s the rub.
