You can call it what you like, but on some you can sit behind a wheel ![]()
but in reality they āsailā themselves, as you either alter course with the use of a couple of buttons ie, left or right hand down by one degree increments or by turning a dial for large alterations, no brakes but automatic clutches if the engine has a gearbox.
do you know if they have brough a game out yet for boat sailing simulator
just would like to know what its all about hands on ahoy ship mate
I am not sure what ticket he held but my old boss in Germany was a master of something and he held great sway when telling us he was one of only 7 or 8 with his maritime qualifications at the time. I know he captained many large vessels and a nicer bloke you could not wish to meet.
What are the classifications in maritime oneupmanship? ![]()
Another great friend of my mum and das was a Humber Pilot and was one of those who went on strike and was sacked. They then set up a company of pilots who were the only people who could navigate the River Humber, apart from the North Sea Ferry masters.
I reckon it was a licence to print money but he was taken ill and had to give it up because of a heart problem. He was well into his sixties though and still hopping onto huge ships from the pilot cutter off Spurn Point.

Until quite recently I had a ship simulator program on this machine, its a free download from a Dutch heavy lift company Jumbo Lift, if you cant Google it let me know and I will try to locate the link for you. Quite realistic but slow to play, well obvious really as ships dont do 90 clks an hour approaching a berth.

Re classification of certificates.
Unfortunately there are more of these now than there are British seafarers to hold them. In the olden days there were Home trade, ie Elbe to Brest. Middle trade, ie North North Norway to and including Medi and Baltic and then full Foreign going which meant everywhere else as well. Then you had the passenger ship endorsement on top of all those. Oil tankers was something else.
Now we will need someone else to come in with the new definitions, cos to be honest I do not understand them all. My British ticket allows me to sail as Master of any British reg. vessel up to a gross tonnage of 10,000 gt, in the old home trade limits but the ones now issued by MCA are up to 3000gt and even 1600gt. Then we have different distances from a safe harbour, ie. 150 miles and another for 300 miles. The list seems bloody endless. Shall I go into āCeCsā certs of equivalent competency⦠another minefield !!!
Sailed on a newy shio registered in Netherlandse Antilles⦠they issued me a cert that meant I could sail on any dry cargo ship of any size anywhere in the world and as they signed up to the agreement to āswapā certs meant that I could then go to MCA show them that one and get aBritish ticket for foreign going, no restrictions, is that clear to you cos it aint to me!!
Mine aint the lowest class of cert, but I have sailed in a wooden built cargo boat and under canvas, it was my birthday last March and I was 106 yr old⦠nowhere near it but sometimes feel it.

Please correct me if wrong but here are the facts as I knew them at the time.
Humber pilots were always self employed until the humber hbr master unilaterally decided that the pilotage costs were too expensive an rightly so. While I applaud there expertise in some cases they were on very very high wages. They went on strike and eventually lost the case when it went to the high court. The humber hm then employed some right clowns to do the job, the upper reaches of the humber are some of the worst to navigate and into the river trent its even worse, the cockups were endless. If you had a plastic duck at home in your bath and could get it to go from one end to the other then come 'āBe A Humber Pilotā. This has since been sorted but at a high cost for damage etc.
I personally know a few ex Humber pilots and have worked alongside a few and I know a few of the new ones as well. I had a run in with the hbr master over the rules for the crossings out of the river and was told by him I had to apologise and never do it again but the worldwide rules governing such an action said I was right but he said I was wrong⦠I told him Bollox!!! Full unabidged edition of what I think of the river humber and the ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā whos in charge and all his crap can be sent by private PM!!
Have to be careful what I say cos I still go there, with and without a pilot depending on what size ship I have.
North Sea Ferrys⦠PECs⦠Pilotage Exemption Certificates
Any master or mate can apply for one if he has done enough trips in and out, daylight and dark and can show by oral examination that he knows the river etc. Then he dont need a licensed Humber pilot to be embarked.
As every where else the majority dont speak with an British or Dutch accent but an east european one ![]()

jumboship.arrowgraphics.nl/shipsimulator/
Think that should do it for you, if not the site will direct you to it, (I hope)
Doing a one off job for an exhibition to Friedrichshafen, money is not brilliant but the run is OK and its making a change from being at sea even if I had a 279 mile commute before I started.
