New driver at 34 and career change

How on earth is it, that Class 2 work pays more? Surely C+E work pays more… I can’t understand that

Aah C1 is 7.5 tonne, Class 2 is C, and Class 1 is C + E, and yes each step up pays a little bit more than the previous one.

Class 2 is heavier and bigger than 7.5 tonne.

Hope that’s clearer

He meant Class 2 pays more than 7.5t. 7.5t is subject to tacho regs so technically speaking it is Class 2 but as people who got their license pre 1996 can drive 7.5t on their car license it is not always seen as Class 2.

Night work pays more than day work and the vast majority of night work is Class 1.

I find that on agency, the tricky thing is getting the work consistently enough to make that sort of money throughout the year. May be different across the UK though.

7.5t was once known as HGV 3 not class 2 and my mum still refers to 7.5t as hgv 3

HGV 1 artics
HGV 2 rigids
HGV 3 7.5t

HGV 1 was artics
HGV2 was multi axle rigids
HGV3 was 2 axle rigids over 7.5 ton including drags!
7.5 ton and under were car licence/over 3.5 ton being log book, tacho.

no cigar for me

If i was in your situation id apply now for parttimer van work aiming to get in with at least 3 different outfits . Hanging in at a job you hate isnt a good idea in my opinion .I once left a job i hated was damn good money -so i applied for anything and everything and was busy busy right away. Even at a real dozey looking job youll meet folk who can point you right

How did you get on with this?

I always wanted to drive Lorrie’s from a little kid , spent a fair bit of my spare time round the local yard , work experience , had a job when leaving school .

But my dad said your not doing a dead end job like that so did a apprenticeship at rolls Royce , did a few jobs in engineering then left to drive Lorrie’s

Dad was right , driving Lorrie’s has led me knowhere , and looking at pension I have from rolls Royce , aveling barford etc if I’d of continued in engineering I’d be long retired , yea I enjoyed it years ago , but it was a terrible , stupid decision to Chuck in a decent career , dad was retired at 55 , big house , holiday home in Spain , caravan at minhead etc etc

Should of taken his advice

A former colleague of mine on the buses has always driven buses. Lives in a big house down the road from me and has maybe a dozen rental properties.

That’ll be the loose change he found down the seat backs!

All I could find was chewing gum
