Can vouch for this, the guy is as mad as a bag of frogs - and a top bloke, its Lucy you gotta watch out for, that girls just mean
Is that your wife
apparently
Lol if I see her I will say hi
Are you starting full time? or holiday relief/cab hopping- its just unusual for them to take on trampers from scratch. Most have to prove themselves while doing the holiday cover , But they have a new MD (ex Elite) so maybe they have changed things
I will be Shunting 1st whilest learning the ropes and getting used to reversing and locking the trailers ect as all new to me they have taken on a trainer/driver
Things are changing at Containerships…the TM does a fantastic job and its thanks to her and her team’s skills that we can afford to pay decent wages to drivers who do a decent day’s work in an industry sector where pence per mile rates are traditionally poor and drivers are abused as this is the only way some companies can make profits to survive and invest in the future…we are in a fortunate position that we have control of our own destiny and have a platform from which we can grow the business, secure and create new jobs. Also Mel and most others I’ve met are good blokes (and Lucy). I know…I’m the new MD (ex Elite).
I know a company around this way that pays 4ppm ? Is that good or bad, they get paid for col/del aswell
4 pence per mile■■?
I thought that aswell, unless he made a mistake lol
Well hello boss I would like to say thanks for giving me a try and loving it so far
Hi Graham… Should’ve posted on this sooner really, but I’m not as active here as I used to be these days (other fish to fry, mostly involving rowing boats - don’t ask… ) so I kind of haven’t got 'round to it. Sorry about that!
Anyhow, welcome to the job. I think we passed on the docks the other day - most unusual, for 2 vehicles to actually be moving in there!
As my better half has already said, you won’t go far wrong with Conships. And he should know, he covered my maternity leave when I had our youngest nipper. Matty’s 8 in a few weeks, and I’m still here, which says more than a thousand words on an internet forum, I reckon. Especially when you consider I was a serial jobhopper up until then…
Despite what some of our more…searches for diplomatic word…mithering drivers may try and have you believe, it’s quite simple really. If you play fair with them, they’ll play fair with you. I’ll hold my hands up here and now and admit I’m not very popular with some of the others, but as a firm Conships have been very good to me, so I tend not to look for and find problems that don’t exist. Send half of the more…vocal…lads back to bog standard general haulage for a week and, trust me, they’d be begging to come back - in fact, quite a few have over the years!
Anyway, there you go. You know who I am and where I am now. There are many far worse places to cut your teeth, so enjoy.
Ps. Mel’s mad as a box of frogs. In a good way. He’s also been driving for eons, learnt his trade going out with his old man as a nipper, and is a rich seam of genuinely useful advice and information. He won’t, however, speak to you for at least 6 months. He’s “old school” Conships, and that’s their way. It took two years before he spoke to me!
I don’t know If be still works there driving the other shunter but watch out for Dave “the dog” lol
Hi Lucy thanks for getting in touch and I am sorry I don’t remember seeing you but then again I probably looked like a fish out of water there is so much to take in with a new company and being new to the whole class 1 driving let alone leading docks and Wilson and then going to Scarborough and thirsk and then team valley and learning site rules ect but it has been fun I love the merc truck also drove the iveco but the merc is my favourite so far. Everyone is friendly so far and not heard any bad things from drivers so far.
THat should read learning docks and wilton
