My favourite lorry, (and the reason why)!

Aye, we used to run it into there as well, It was a good tip & you could park in there overnight, the securiy guy would put the kettle on for you, After we tipped there we ran accross to A/L Lead Works in Chester & loades scrap batteries for Elswick Works Newcastle. The good old days when there was a bit money to be made Eh, Regards Larry. , If I remember rightly the rate from Harden down to Manchester was £8.00.per tonne. earley 80s.

Here’s my list and I have to start with the first lorry I drove a Volvo N10 6 wheel tipper, I was 15 at the time and used to run it on nights as there were very few coppers about at that time of day, I loaded at a Baryities mine and ran to the docks then home it time to get a few hours sleep before milking time.

Next has to be a little Bedford TK, the first lorry I owned, a flatbed 4 cyl that I used to deliver concrete lintels with with a 3 horse Rice on the tow bar for shifting horses.

After that I moved to London and contracted into BRS as a self employed driver on a Daf 3300 delivering Coca Cola to warehouses up and down the country at night, I loved that truck, could pull 80 mph all night and pass everything in sight.

I’ve owned or driven a lot of trucks since then and now my current favorite on the fleet is the 99 Magnum 430 which so far seems a pretty decent truck but time will tell if it makes it into the list.

OK, here goes, I’m not a lorry driver, I’ve never driven one for a living. My dad was the lorry driver in our family. I spent many a school holiday in the passenger seat of various lorries he had. I have thought long and hard about which lorry would be my all time favorite. Obviously I can only go on ‘stories’ I’ve heard about them and the looks alone. I’ve started off by narrowing it down to 2 categories… Oldies and Others. Oldies being some of the many lorries I’ve seen pictures of or seen at rallies and others being the ones I remember as a kid growing up in the 80’s and 90’s. Here were the finalists…

Oldies

The Foden S39

The Scammell Handyman

The Volvo F88

Scammell Crusador

Others

Scania 142m

Daf 3600ATI

Volvo F10

Ford Transcontinental

and the winners are…

Oldies

Foden S39

Others

Vovlo F10

Like I said, I have no driving experience of any other these, this is just my own personal taste. I’d be interested to hear how from a drivers point of view I faired in this or if my choices are a right loada ■■■■■ ha ha

anyway, I enjoyed it.
