This is arguably the most essential industry in existence. Without sugar they’d be no rum.
The roads have gotten wider, the trucks bigger and the cars faster, but the attractions and points of interest remain largely the same.
A pleasant trip dowm the 1800km Memory Lane, although I’d rather not go back to those conditions. We can now comfortably do the round trip, including loading and unloading in a five day week. Back then each leg took as long.

I can personally attest that it is quite possible to alight from the cab, light a smoke, stroll to the rear most of three fuel tankers, visually confirming all wheels are still attached, reapeat up the left side and around the front, dispose of the ■■■■ and continue the journey.
We don’t have tachographs, only a paper logbook, allowing for some creative literature.

It took under two weeks to bring the country to its knees. Governments of all level and ideology were forced to meet the owner drivers’ demands. It’s doubtful such solidarity would manifest itself with today’s drivers.
Unfortunately many of the gains these brave men made were short-lived, it typical government fashion, what was given with one hand was shortly taken back with the other.
