Terry T:
Tell Siemens that, their units will default to POA when the truck starts moving and cannot be overridden.
Do other units do this ?
Yes, all digital tachographs record POA for the card in the driver 2 slot when the vehicle is moving, but the first 45 min of POA in that situation counts as a break.

So what if driver 2 is actually doing other work? Can it not be recorded?
Nope. I do multi manned runs on the odd occasion and you’re stuck with POA. The regs say the first 45 minutes of POA can count as break to reset the driving time so long as the 2nd man isn’t doing other duties such as navigating but even if they are there is no way to record it.

If you really want to book other work while in the passenger seat you have 3 options:
Record other work then do a printout with a written manual entry on it.
Take the card out and do a manual entry when you put it back in.
As the most you’re likely to be doing when in the passenger seat is a bit of paperwork or navigation leave the card in slot 2 and book POA, that would generally be my preference
1968kg:
Surely the tacho ought to stay on other work if it’s selected and only default to poa when moving if break was selected… In fact it should stay on break but that’s a separate issue!
I agree but I didn’t write the EU digital tachograph specifications

1 Don’t you mean record poa as other work can’t be recorded?
2 Would that not cause problems for driver 1 as far as MM rules apply
3 Agreed!

Yes sorry that should have said record POA
2 Would that not cause problems for driver 1 as far as MM rules apply
Not legally, but I’m not sure if it would make a difference to what’s displayed in the tachograph VDO counter.
tachograph:
I have no personal experience of the analysis when multi-manning, but as the driver card is marked as multi-manning I would think that any decent analysis software would count the first 45 minutes of POA when the card is in slot 2 as break and not issue an infringement report.
But I don’t know for sure
I use Smartanalysis and it does exactly that when multi manned - so no infringement.

Thanks for the confirmation, I would hope that any reputable analysis software would do the same.
