dbp, My life seems to be busier now than before I retired, but I still find time for plenty of idiocy!
retired old ■■■■, well yes my wife does tell me times, “grow up”,what on earth does she mean?? i must admit i am all ways messing about when seriousness must take over, i am now learning to hold my tongue and let others speak, have you heard about the talking stick…if a argument is starting to rear its head, no matter how many people or just the two of you ,someone nominates ,any object to represent a stick could be a spoon or anything ,and the only person allowed to speak is the person holding the object, once finished talking they pass it on to whoever they like, untill all is heard, and generally things get sorted out.with no one on their High horse…dbp
In the mid 90’s we subbed a bit of work from DFDS out of Harwich. One day I got the paperwork for a trailer to be delivered to Windsor an address near the Bus station. I went and picked the trailer up from Parkestone Quay and made my way to Windsor. The trailer felt empty but we arrived at the address. Once there a girl jumped in my cab and instructed me to follow this car. We traveled down to the safari park and in we went. On opening the side of the tilt I was met with a number of Lego land scenes all made up ready to be put in place. One scene I remember was the Dutch Windmills.
Not an everyday occurrence and certainly sticks in my mind.
Once had to pull a load of glider engines back from Italy.
You could have strapped them down ON TOP the load of Elephant foreskins, enroute from Africa to the sausage factories for BRATWURST
Where do I start?
When the RAF sold it’s Belfast transport planes the spares went too, I had the job of moving all the propellers from Quedgeley to Southend airport. This was pre M25 days and the route was around the North Circular. Six loads in all went using an old four in line lowloader. Careful measurement was made of the first load as there was only inches clearance on some of the NC bridges. I told them I didn’t know what all the fuss was about as even if I did hit a bridge with a prop tip it wasn’t going to damage the bridge. Having loaded the first set on Friday afternoon I set out 4:00am Monday doing the trip in somewhat under four hours. (them wuz the days ) Pulling into the hanger Southend I drove under the wing of the Belfast to get into unloading position ( Dirt big planes they were) Then back to put another set on. Six trips Monday to Saturday saw a decent pay packet at the end of it.
Other jobs, Hay from South Germany to Cirencester for some fussy horses.
Snow (the artificial stuff) from Stroud to Koln in high summer. A photographers studio near the centre (That was fun)
Oh yes and a few loads of photocopiers.
I was in India and managed to photograph this travelling along the dual carriageway. I believe it was sugar beet. Maximising the load potential

If it fits, it will be carried…
