Try looking here: paulanderson.pikfu.net/set1748186/

But all is not what it seems…

This is how it was originally built, as a 38T Leader and not as a double-drive unit:

I was given the print years ago - apologies to the photographer if he’s out there, but there are no markings on the back!

A Photo of an Atkinson operated by us. Thanks to Bubbleman’s Scrapbook Memories. 32ton GVW fitted with Gardner 180, We did not need tractors of that weight as 20-26 ton GVW was all that we required. Thanks to the failure of Leyland Lynx, Leyland Mastiffe, Dodge, Ford D seriesBedford TK and TM we decided to buy this second hand. It speaks volumes that one of our longest serving drivers Colin Watson who had been allocated a Lynx from new, about a couple of years earlier, followed a few months before this Atkinson arrived, a New TM requested that he was allocated this vehicle. The Atkinson was certainly more reliable, and produced much better fuel consumption, and was cheaper to run, than the lighter rivals and most strangley of all Colin said the cab was more comfortable and better to drive than all the more modern vehicles.

can’t see it having an 8LXB but the grille looks a bit wider? maybe just imagining it,can’t see a car transporter warrenting a big Gardner!! Great shot all the same1 Cheers Bewick.

Yes it did have an 8LXB - and it wasn’t the only one either.

The radiator on the 8-cylinder Gardner models as well as those with big ■■■■■■■ and Rolls-Royce engines was wider than the standard version - hence the top bumper brackets were inboard of the glass-fibre radiator surround and had cut-outs in the actual grille.

I wonder if any of them have survived into preservation? Would make one hell of a 4 wheeler flat coupled to a turntable twin wheeled flat trailer! “H”,“H”! get your boots and boilersuit on we’er off down the “smoke” with this class wag and drag,I baggsy driving to first cafe,so get your head down my son!!! Cheers Dennis.

I know its maybe not the thread for this shot but this was one of a number of Merc 300E’s that I ran and they were as smooth as silk just like the Atki’s and this particular '88 one was nearly the same fleet colour as the motors!

That’s the first decent motor on this thread!

Couldnt afford to run a 300E these days Dennis with the price of fuel , i was looking for another Volvo recently and noticed a S80 on a 56 plate with 80000 on the clock going for £5500 and thought it was cheap til i saw it had a V8 petrol in it beautiful £40000+ car going for a song

If you don’t do a lot of miles the price of juice isn’t as important and you can pick up a cracking motor for little money! Those 300E’s I ran were non turbo 6 cyl diesels and they always averaged up in the mid /late 30 mpg’s I ran them up to 60k miles then swapped for a new one,the Merc Dealer could retail them warrented providing they were under 60k miles. If I got close to 60k before the new one was delivered I dropped the speedo off the gearbox!! and could drive on the rev counter speedwise.Well it wasn’t my fault if the new one was late! I had a transport operation to run which meant I was all over the place every week! Cheers Dennis.

Sounds a bit like ‘The World According to Hugh Gardner’
I regularly managed 33/35 mpg on round trips to London at around 75/80 mph on cruise control.I always reckoned that the transport fleet spilt more derv on the floor than the Bewick managment used in their diesel cars!! Cheers Dennis.
All the best, Andrew

Hello, heres a few more, the first I think is an ex Bowkers motor,240 or Harry might confirm it.

Apologies for yet another shot of KLG287L…The last one is its stablemate KAM355P which I believe is in preservation with a mate of Dave the Renagades…sorry for the crappy shot.

KAM355P belongs to David Edwards of M. A . Evans transport

It’s reputedly the last Borderer built.
