GS OVERLAND:
Hi Deisel dan340
I Just read your thread.
If you do go and avoid Syria, then beware because the Saudis have also banned right hand drive vehicles.
If you have a left hand drive vehicle then the best overland route would be down to Ancona, ferry to Patras, Greece, then drive up to Ipsala border into Turkey, down to Cilvegozu / Bab el Hawa, into Syria. The Border Customs clearing agent Wattar will magically turn your ATA or TIR Carnet into an Arab manifest, which will take you all the way to Muscat, via Jordan, Saudi and UAE. You will need a Carnet de Passage for your truck and make sure that it has enough pages to get you down and back. Take some spare tyres and a jack and wheel brace, there are no tyre services like the ones you know.
Good luck.
GS
Thanks for all the above. The quotes in,so I’ll just sit back and wait…(for some Eastern Bloc herbert to undercut me by 50% no doubt
).If I do get offered the job though,I’m going to go for it.I mean,I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched “Destination Doha”…

In a 7.5t it will be more “Destination Doha Lite” !!

“Destination Doha” was 30 years ago,it’s now a whole new ball game!
Although I did a lot of swanning about on my travels, getting into Saudi via Egypt was not one route I tried.
IF I had to do it now,the route GS OVERLAND has described is the route I should investigate, but as things have changed so much in recent years,it would require some serious thought.
When “Destination Doha” was made in '77,that was the very best time to be doing the job,why do you think myself and many more packed it up 10 years later?
Admittedly there’s not as much work going that way now,and there is only a handfull of stalwarts like Chris Hooper still doing it.
Try that.Sub it to Astran, then offer to travel with the load as second man if you feel you need to feel the sand between your toes.
