middle laners

The “Middle Lane Owners Club” (Do a web search for that, it’s interesting!) always gets me annoyed, I’m not allowed in lane 3 to overtake them but if I undertake to get past I can get booked for it and they get off scott free…

I have done a considerable amount of driving in the USA and in most states I can overtake in any lane, I really have not found it to be a problem whilst driving a car but in a truck it’s another story…

One bit of road that does annoy me is the Dartford bridge, trucks are not allowed in lanes 3 and 4 so we have to stick to lanes 1 and 2, so why are all those cars in the truck lanes :open_mouth:

Have a minimum speed of 60 mph again fine heavily if this is not kept.

My poor old Fiesta 1.1 can’t maintain 60mph on a hill when it’s full of stuff. Should I not be allowed on the motorway? My Land Rover can’t maintain 60mph when I have a trailer on either (well, the limit is 60 for that, so I shouldn’t exceed it either).

My friend had a 1.1.Fiesta (before the yobs torched it!) and she said it wouldn’t do more than 65 on the motorway. (She followed me once and I had to keep stopping for her to catch up)

Funny how I managed to get 70 mph out of it with ease when I drove it!

Small cars these days are easily capable of doing 70 mph on the motorway. My partner has a 1 litre Corsa and that will easily exceed the motorway speed limit for this country.

Perhaps if she put her seat further forward she would be able to press the accelerator all the way to the floor!

If there is a problem for the truck drivers in the States being undertaken in the nearside lane then why dont you move in to that lane and then traffic can pass you on the offside lane?.

I know its legal over there to undertake but common sense says stick to the lane you cant be undertaken in doesnt it?.

(I have never driven in the states only been driven by other people.)

:grimacing: That’s a cracking post and sums the problem up to a tee in the last paragraph :sunglasses: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Mine will do 80+ without too much effort on the level, but put 3 people and some luggage in it, and it’s down to under 60 on the uphills, even with foot to the floor and a good run up.

Anyway, it’s not generally an issue cos I don’t drive it loaded that much very often and generally on the hills that I’m down below 60 the trucks are down to 50 anyway.

There is a site set up just for shaming these people :open_mouth:

My friends fiesta probably would as well but I am not going to admit to breaking the speed limit when members of the local constabulary might be looking in

It goes without saying that I tested that on private land. I’m a good boy and wouldn’t ever go even 70.1mph on a public road.

Honest.

Ah, we are too honest aren’t we!

I did legally exceed 70mph earlier this year in my BMW - on a trip to Germany. Those autobahns are wonderful places to see what your car is really capable of :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

i can never get in the middle lane cuz its allways full of lorrys!!,also the biggest culprits are old people of about 80,why do they buy cars like honda civic type R (yes ive seen it) and drive it in the middle lane at 45-50■■?,i try to use the empty lane(1) as much as possible, like when lanes 2&3 are at a compleat stand still yet no one will move to lane 1,also middle age women, why dont they move,i indicate for ages but they try to over take you at 55 but wont move in to 3 to let you out.i did git pulled tho on the m6 last christmas eve at 7.00pm,i was the only person on the m6 between 6 & 7they pulled me for doing 65 in the middle lane,i did start in 1 but over took a van and just kinda forgot to change lanes!!oops!

A lot of people don’t know how to drive on the highways here. That would probably cause a bigger problem. Some idiots enter the highway on the slip road and have no idea how to merge into traffic. They get to the end of the slip road and slow down to a ridiculous speed and pull directly in front of the oncoming traffic thats maintaining highway speeds. I’ve seen trucks have to slam on breaks for cars entering, swerve to the shoulder, or have to try to manuever into the middle lane to avoid hitting someone. Most truck drivers try to stay in the right lane anyway, but its just not always possible to stay there. The biggest problem is that the average driver has no concept of how trucks work or what their stopping distance is, and seem to think that it should be as quick and easy to stop a loaded truck as it is a car. They’re clueless.

And you should see the setup on some of these highways… the entrance lane is directly before the exit lane, so the vehicles entering and the vehicles exiting have to share the same lanes and cross each other going in different directions and try to keep the flow of traffic going… don’t know how more people don’t get killed. I’d love to know what genius designed those roads. Its bad enough trying to get a car off the highway in those places, let alone a truck.

The inner ring road round Coventry has shared entry & exit ‘gaps’ similar to those described in Kates post are there many accidents on them ?

Here’s a good one.
You’re a truck driver, at a party with your wife. She introduces you to one of her friends. A bubbly type with a head full of cuddly toys. After the pleasantries the friend says,
‘Wife says you’re driving again’.
Me ‘Yes worst luck’
After bit more idle banter talk comes back to driving and driving on motorways.
Her ‘Ooo I don’t like motorways I get a bit scared when I have to overtake ‘coz I can’t judge the speed of the cars coming up from behind.
Me ‘ if you can’t judge them in your mirrors have a quick glance over your shoulder see if that helps’
Her ‘Well actually (Emits a little giggle) I normally slow down a bit and when the lorry put his indicator on to overtake me I put my foot down and pull out. Well you know if it safe for him to pull out its OK for me. (Another little giggle). :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
I nearly dropped my pint. I didn’t know what to say. My wife saw my face and swiftly got hold of my arm and dragged me into another room to calm down. It still makes me shudder thinking about it now.

and they dont read the highway code either
