Middle East - Not Astran!

Don’t think so. Wasn’t it written by an educated but very naive Canadian journalist who wrote a very entertaining, but largely fictional (because he was influenced by gossipy, dreamy, drunken lorry drivers - quel surprise, and yes I been one of those too  ) so-called synopsis of what the ‘Middle-East Run’ was all about?

Nonetheless, that flippin’ book, coupled with BBC 2’s Destination Doha was largely responsible for catapaulting me into driving lorries to places like Doha.

Sorry, I frecked up there. The book was Baghdad trucker

 oh, that book! Yes I’ve read that too. You’re probably right then.

“At least their windscreen wipers would still function at speed“
Until they fell out when the cabs warped in the heat, Les.

A guy who drove for Davies was called Kevin Noble and he wrote a book called Baghdad Trucker. Well worth a read!

I know it`s a long shot Les, Did you ever come across Tony Jones who worked for H G Pentus Brown he only had one leg but you would never have know, he was about doing similar work as you where, I often meet up with him and have chats about the past , that is the only reason for asking. all the best.

The only Tony Jones I know of (and never met) did Middle East with old Fodens - one was LHD - and operated out of Smallwood, Sandbach. He later became the JO in VIJORE (Vick Jones Read) when they banded together to run a contract into Baghdad in the mid-’70s.

Tony lost his leg because of an accident in his bull nosed Mack, so history has it. My dad worked with him at Pents in the 60’s and 70’s, driving both in the UK and Europe. I remember a time when Tony was reversing in his F700 and changing up as he was going back trying to upset John Brown, he managed to slow the truck down before he hit the king pin as he coupled.

Battle-worn Transcon there, with spread-axle tilt with belly tank and chamfered canopy (for railway tunnels). Looks as if it’s queueing at the Turk/Syrian border at Cilvegozu.

I think Chevallier Bros did go quite far, but no idea if they are still going or not.

James International were also a company going long distance that I saw around the EU but I don’t know if they got ti the ME or not? Pretty sure they are still going along OK.

That looks like the Foden ‘Crackers’ used to drive as a subbie for R&J. I wonder whatever became of him?
