Charlie, the best pick up I ever had when I was running out of Sheffield Market was P.J.Pouparts in Southampton, oranges, always in those plywood cases and then cardboard boxes.Always plenty of blokes to help you handball 'em on,not like Hull or Lāpool where four dockers ran them onto the back of the trailer and you had to carry 'em up to the headboard - ānot allowed to go on the motor, mateā.Hither Green was a good place as well, run by National Carriers or B.R.I think.
The old Covent Garden was a bloody awful place, even when youād found somewhere to park, glad Iām out of it .
I remember some of the Lincolnshire market hauliers,Ernest F Kime,George H Kime,Staples Bothers,Wm Epton,Lamberts and Spriggs from Bicker,Gosberton Farm Produce,Machins,Parkers,Tuplins,Tower Hill Transport to name just a few.Sinclairs and Marshalls from Evesham were another well known couple of market hauliers.
This takes me back to the late 70s early 80s down at flathouse quay, loading produce for the makets,a few of the names i remember are T Cobb and sons, R Bailles, Windebanks, the white boys, the clay boys,t jarvis, dave smalls IPS,courtneys and some out of towners like wheatagrove, walter games, stockdales etc.
i can rember olivers of benickdoin northan markets also foxes of meana and bj norman of mildenhall 2 name but afew
Working for Scania I go into Staplehurst Transits yard
They run some very clean units and trailers before christmas they took delivery on a new R series Top liner fully loaded

hiya,
Bowkers of Blackburn pulled a lot of fruit and veg at one time, iāve handballed quite a few loads in my early years, do they still do any??.
thanks harry long retired.
A couple of pics for you Harry: the first is from Leyland Motors, I believe
The bottom bumper is actually a towbar - the fruit must get through!
And this one dates from the mid-1930s - Iām far from certain, but Iām told that the location may be King Street, on the north side of Covent Garden
Great pics. Could almost be a whereās harry picture
hiya,
Two cracking pictures Chris, remember the four wheeler but never drove it and even iām too young to remember the legger, but stick a drawbar on the back and iāll take it down on trunk tonight, and aidey iād most likely be across the road in the pub fuelling up ready for the next trip.
thanks harry long retired.
My thoughts exactly Harry. Who could blame you.
I only wish i had carried a camera with me much more often than i did over the years.
aidey:
It could well be harry i tipped in there yard at preston last week. But of course you dont get in the office building. OH NO warehouse office for you drive.
II HAVE JUST STARTED AT BOWKERS IN PRESTON AND ON MY INDUCTION DAY ONE OF THE MANAGERS HAD GREAT PRIDE IN SHOWING ME THE PHOTOS OF BOWKERS WAGONS MOVING THAT FAMOUS LOAD OF ORANGES SO YES THE PHOTOS STILL HANG ON THE OFFICE WALLS .
Hope your job goes ok.
Theyāre probably very proud of there heritage and rightly so.
Now to get back to the markets another thing we would do was reload out otf the garden back to fyffes of Norwich. By the time you had loaded got to norwich and tipped. It was time to start alll over again start loading up for that night. No wonder i lost weight when i was on that job. Could do with that now didānt need it then

When I was growing up, the busy Humber Street Market in Hull was full of old trucks, Willow Transport. Chapman Sheilds, Cutsforths, Reader Bros, KeyTrans, Spear, Bogg, Slater, Link Transport, Watts of Beverley and dozens more. With the advent of the European ferry trade into King George Docks these were replaced by Jac W Herreveld. LionPort, Scholey, Geest & Lion Shipping, which morphed into Parkland International.
FRUIT TRANSPORT COMPANIES FROM KENT

I remember Hull market well, weād get to Newhaven from Spain with 24 pallets of oinions before we knew where we were tipping and Hull was always a āspoilerā!! One I remember well was; 2 drops Sheffield Mkt, 2 in Hull Mkt, 1 in Bradford Mkt and one in a wholesaler in Bradford, (being from Liverpool) perfect if they could be delivered in that order but!!! Hull didnāt open until 7am!! So it was; 2 Sheffield, 1 bradford Mkt, then back track to Hull 2 drops then back AGAIN to Bradford for the wholsaler!!!
Why oh why didnāt Hull fruit & veg market open early hrs like just about all the other UK F&V Mkts??
Ross.
used to go into grimsby fish market quite often in the 80ās with shipping tackle.not been since so dont know if its still there
