put it to contexted, one of my trucks last week did £2500 + vat used £585 in fuel and did 1350 miles roughly and minus £700 in drivers wages  £1.28 per mile :open_mouth:      ■■■■ take

Where’s the insurance, truck finance(if any), operator rental, night out costs ■■

I`d be looking to take it out of the £562.50 cost pot

£2500.00 - Gross
£1915.00 - After Fuel
£1215.00 - After Wages [Night Outs included ?, if not, take them out of the cost pot]
£1125.00 - After Trailer Rental [Guess]
£562.50 - In the Cost Pot
£562.50 - In the Gross Profit Pot - :arrow_right: 22.5%

It`s not a bad return for providing a unit + driver, and collecting the paperwork on a Saturday afternoon :open_mouth:

Very simplistic maths, but it`s worked for me over the years

its higher than that mate as theres no rental

just done our year end and we are running at 12% gross profit over the year and + 9% growth, profit down buy 3%

the week before was £3000 driver £840 and about 1600 miles

all my insuance costs are paid out at the start of the year  , no rent truck is paid for  night out costs? none proper drivers know where to park without paying for it :grimacing: all in all £1215 to be split where ever it needs to go, thats the wifes job :grimacing: :open_mouth:

You say there is no insurance premium to be factored in as it has been paid at the beginning of the year. Fair enough, has it been funded by last year’s earnings then, and is next year’s premium coming out of this year’s earnings?
Also, I don’t see any calculation which takes depreciation Into account. You say your costs are low because the truck is paid for, which suggests that either you are very wealthy, or the truck is quite old.
If you able to buy new trucks outright, well done, but they will depreciate hugely to begin with.
If you are running older ones, the maintenance costs will be almost as high as the depreciation on the new ones.
I suspect that this is the reas on for the difference between your assumed weekly return of 22percent and your year end return of 12percent.

Anyway, whatever the truth is, if you have work as you say you have which permits very reasonable grossings and at the same time has a fuel cost element of around 24percent, you can’t go far wrong, and the sooner you get more trucks out there the better.

i run 1 x r620 07 1 x 164 580 (the only way this is going is up in price) 1 x 60 reg daf 105 xf superspace cab (dont even say it  ), 2 x 2010 schmitz fridge trailers 2 x curtainside trailers 2005 / 2007, 1 sprinter curtainsider 2011/ 1 x ford custom 65 reg, 1 ford connect 61 reg, oh and 1 x 2011 range rover tdv8 sport overfinch oh and hopefully a 65 reg discovery commercial and thats as big as i in tend to get due to drivers :unamused:

( im not trying to be big headed just we have worked bloody hard and given up a lot to get where we are today our 1st family holiday in 11yrs was last october)

trading 12 yrs so must be doing something right :grimacing:

my 164 has 2.5mil on the clock and sales through its test every year and is going up in price year on year :grimacing: , my 620 has 1.3mil (and is holding its money) was tested in may all it needed was a brake light bulb, if i let them run below test standard i might have a bigger % at the end of the year, my trucks get per test then taken straight to the test station the day after 2 days off the road

if i had 22% at the end of a year id be rich lol

well burnley si it sounds like a hard earnt success story best of luck to you mate.

Is the 12% gross margin for working as a subby or do you have your own customers?

Has anyone run double-manned units for the aforementioned companies or other companies?

Well done you!!
It sounds a very attractive business model, but one that may be quite tricky to maintain long term, although if you’ve been doing it twelve years then it obviously works.

Anyway, a man who is big enough to fess up to running a DAF is not afraid to face up to his hopefully infrequent mistakes, and is to be respected.

I’m an owner driver myself, based in quite a remote part of Scotland, and will have been for forty years next year.
I have a unit and a couple of slightly specialised trailers. I’ve managed to keep my own customers all this time,
and not to sub for anyone apart from the very occasional times I need to get to somewhere out of area , to make a collection.
It’s worked ok for me over the piece. I’ll never be rich, but it’s given me a much better than average living over the years. Just shows you, it’s out there to be done. Quite surprising when you read some of the negative comments on here.

lol can’t complain about the Daf, best cab and bed of any truck, only a magnum is better apart from the storage
