Manchester liners

My Grandad did quite a bit of work for ML in the 60-70’s. Would any of you have any photos from that time?

Anyone remember Thamas Craig of Barrhead? They built up a big fleet in the early 70s, nice new volvos, almost exclusively on Manchester Liners work. I think they were eventually owned or part-owned by Manchester Liners. No idea what happened to them, they just seemed to disappear.

Sorry Euromat to hi-jack this thread, I too was with the said Furness Withy Group but only in the early Eighties at that time it had incorparated Blue funnel, P.s.n.c. [pacific steam] Andes and ACL … At that time I was getting the last of our large, great merchant navy ie: mid-ships accom, derricks and mcgregor hatches Fo’clse living quarters large crews 40+ [you needed them with those sticks on watch]

Manchester liners had a large number of Cypriots on board not a great idea especially in a position of trust but you get that everywhere and I remember everyone on board was proud of the fact it was privately owned by a Woman whom they liked very much guess the wages were good in those days.

Tramping in those days were 9+ months away and it suited us mainly to get our tax and ni back was ensured a happy leave then when spent up sign back on… Once again sorry if I have gone off track again ,but it’s not often I have a chance to talk about ships in land locked BRUM… many thanks

Thomas Craig was, I’m sure, owned by Manchester Liners. Their was another company from around Manchester/Liverpool/ the Wirral, called Wardle (I think),that also were owned by M/L.
Craigs were owned originally, I believe, by Jim McKelvie after TDG bought out McKelvies of Paisley. He later sold it after starting Ailsa Trucks importing Volvo’s.
I think (I’m not sure after all these years.) that after M/L closed or was absorbed that Craigs were closed. They also done work for Rootes/Chrysler out of the Linwood car factory, running a trunk to the midlands with F88’s.
