Do you have some inside knowledge that you’ld care to share with us? The investigation, as reported in the link, showed the distance to approx 200 meters from the motor way. Do you know how the motorway sits in relation to the surrounding area at the location of the incident? There were many people who, on that night, made decisions that changed lives and probably regret. At least 7 never lived to regret.

I don’t know if Steve has any insider knowledge but I recovery 6 vehicles from the scene and I travel that road daily so yeah I know how the motorway sits in relation to the area and I know exactly what a [zb] state the vehicles were in.

I also know that we were halted from further recovery when another body was found that wasn’t supposed to be there. I know enough to form an opinion and I have.

Holy ■■■■ Tom :open_mouth: that doesn’t sound good. times like that I take my hat off to recovery men and emergency services etc. not a pretty atmosphere to be working in

Not ideal no. Recovery isn’t ideal for me but it fills a gap when the tippers are quiet

Samworth wagon?

Was [zb] bad that night watching the trucks burn from the back, along the trailer towards the cab, knowing there were people in the car buried under the underrun bar, before any blue lights were on the scene totally impotent to help. When the first 2 fire trucks arrived the trailer was blazing full height virtually the whole length.

Bad night as an observer caught up it; can’t begin to understand how the emergency services and recovery crews cope with that after the job is done. Respect Tom.

Honestly? I’m sure it was worse to be involved and survive knowing you couldn’t help ones fellow man. Emergency services get specialist training and care fe dealing with this type of incident, we as recovery were offered the same. As a by stander what was offered very little beyond 6 counselling sessions if you can persuade your GP to help you.

I was not involved with the collision but just witnessed it from about 100m. At first I was just hacked off about being held up but then the fire started and it started to get surreal. I phoned in to let the office know I was safe (we’re tracked) and was told that one of my colleagues was caught up in the middle of it. That kind of changes the mindset; up till then the victims were “persons unknown” suddenly someone I’d been speaking with earlier in the day is among them.

As it happened he had no physical injuries beyond some whiplash but his head was in a bad place. We were speaking on the phone during the night till he was taken to Yeovil Hospital to be checked over. I was acting as a secondary line between him the office, and him and the shop steward speaking with him every day over the next week. He was off for a while and met up with another driver from our company (different contract) who was also involved. When he did return we were paired up for 2-3 weeks while he got his nerve/confidence back.

I worked the following day and asked to be routed past Taunton the following week to face my own demons. I found talking with him helpful for both of us though he is no longer with us having moved on.

I totally agree about driving standards involved, even eyewitness said cars were going past them at 70mph when they hit the “fog” however to allow an organised firework display to go ahead only about 30-40 yard away from a major motorway where thousands of pounds of fireworks would be let off defies belief and whoever allowed the event to go ahead needs their head looking at.

Errrr yeah I do travel that route regular and pass the scene when I do drops in Devon and Cornwall :unamused:

it was also stated that fog was in that area that night,i really cannot see how a fireworks display can cause that type of blanket smog on a motorway, many of us have been to firework displays over the years and they have not caused that amount of smoke, maybe i am wrong i dont know but as i said i have never seen smoke that bad from a display

There was some fog in the area, the worst I experienced was about half an hour earlier around Collumpton when I was down to 40. As I approached the crash scene I stopped just before the river Tone bridge, about 100m from the back of the carnage. There were some vehicles that had stopped and were hit by others, indeed the force of 1 impact ripped an under-slung taillift from the off side mounting of the Iceland trailer.

Some people made good decisions that night and still paid a high price, others made terrible decisions and will have to live with their consciences.

i agree and it was a terrible accident
