Looking for old photo's of Forest of Dean firms

Me.Paul.101:
When would this photo have been taken and I wonder if it is being loaded at Cinderford? Does anyone know how many people would have worked for them and what happened when they were taken over? Too many questions for a friday night maybe…

The photo of the ERF was taken in 1963 at the Coleford Brick and Tile Company Hawkwell Green, Cinderford,Glos. The driver was Jakey Gardner.Ive been told Shela Daviess first lorry was a REO,he also ran a bonneted Mercedes artic and became an agent for them. I think the ERF was the only one painted yellow, all the others were green.

Here`s another old forest firm, ROSSITER & JAMES LTD. of Parkend [Next door to Forest of Dean Caravans where the car sales are now].They were painted green and ran Albion and Leyland 8 & 6 wheel bulk tippers hauling coal, coke &scrap. They also bought out Weston Transport from Weston-Under-Penyard which ran Scammell Handyman tractor units hauling steel from Llanwern. In later years they changed the fleet to all ERF supplied by Richard Read of Longhope. They also changed the colours to yellow, white roofs and blue bodies.

You’ve got one or two good photo’s there. I’ve not seen those before. Only old enough to remember Rossiter & James when they were in yellow etc, but I didn’t know about the Weston-under-Penyard firm.

I drove for rossiter and james in the early 70s when they were blue and grey. first lorry i had was a erf with 180 gardner and no power steering, but it did have pigeon loft on the back!!! after that i progressed to a a b series with jennings sleeper and 240 gardner. at that time they were still running weston transport erfs in green colours out of llanwern.bob dowal( rip) and roger matthews were running the office. they also owned a coal merchants firm by the name of day and co with yards at weyhill nr andover and parkend.

has anybody got any photo,s of the brown commers of i think bradleys who ran out of drybrook quarries in the sixties before amc took over.also i have bought about 30 or 40 photo,s of edwards tranport just lately off tinternet very nice they are to.andyd 4910

Hi chaps that would be Weston Transport ran by Arthur Francis ,he was also a farmer . His colours were red and white as well as the Scammels he had a few Atkinsons bought from Prails atHereford and a Foden 8 wheel flat the driver i think was from Gorsley . Would see it parked up there regards kk

Nobody has mentioned geoff harris of cinderford yet? i started off subbing for him, always reminded me of green grass of heart beat !

I remember working for Geoff when he had that storage unit down Ruspidge road. If he could save a shilling on anything, he would go out of his way to. Not one of my better decisions…

My abiding memory was doing the sonoco contract, cardboard tubes on flat beds, with three huge sheets covering them…took ages to sheet!I am still in contact with two of his old drivers, john coxhead and big jim.

Don’t suppose you got any photo’s. I still haven’t seen any photo’s of Rollie Farr, R.Wards or Bill Hoare from Millwall or Henry Cole of Christchurch…Cheers
