Vic Hooper was the driver in this picture of WHO-305-his son Eddie worked for Victory from 1964 through to the early 70’s.
The order for 2 vehicles was placed with Munn and Underwood in Commercial Road Southampton-On the current MCA site-the second, light 8 mentioned being WHO 877 driven by Walt Wren, who, when finishing his career at VT, drove M. L Meyers 3T Bedford TK out of West Bay Road delivering local.
Both Guys had AV 470’S with Eaton 2 speed axles and were specifically purchased to give the maximum payload carrying bailed scrap steel, from Pollock Brown (Later George Cohen’s 600 group and now EMR) at Northam to South Wales, Reloading steel back to Briggs (Ford) at Swaythling. In the event, when Hooper and Wren were empty in South Wales, SCOW were often unable to load the vehicles back to Swaythling, but could always offer poorly rated loads to Dagenham.
Both vehicles, like all VT’s general Haulage operations, were then put on runs which put them in the correct locations to re-load back to shop distribution at Rownhams, hence Vic Hooper re-loading Cerebos at Middlewich.
WHO 305 is graphed' at Rownhams with Jack Smith aboard and F.C Cyril’ Roden is making sure the cab of Albion 2374TR doesn’t fall off!
2374TR is loaded for the north and would reload from Patterson’s Camp Coffee in Glasgow the following Wednesday with 15 tonnes of Camp Chicory Essence for Warehouse 2 at Rownhams.
WHO 877 is `graphed’ with a load of crane parts from France for delivery to Newcastle. The reload was from Tyne Brand, Gateshead back to Warehouse 1 at Rownhams.
WHO 305 died whilst at the traffic lights at the junction with Burgess Road/The Avenue. The driver detected a burning smell and evacuated the glass-fibre cab before it melted. The list of possessions detailed on his insurance claim suggested that he had at least 9 overnight bags!!!
Pictures of WHO 305 and WHO 877 can be found at this link:

Hi one and all.

I have been away from haulage for a few years now. Im currently flying 737’s for Ryan Air out of Bristol, but for some craaaazzzy reason, I am looking at coming back to haulage, either on my own or working for someone.

I have followed this thread through in its entirety over the last few nights, and I have seen some familiar faces, some trucks which I recognise, and indeed, some names to. With regards to Pat Duffy, I am sure Pat, that I used to drive one of your vehicles in France, Spain and Portugal and sometimes Italy for a guy who you sold the truck to back in the 90’s. I seem to remember his name was Andy and he lived in Salisbury?? It was a blue with white striped 142 Scanny V8. It had a huge tank on it, and I think (if memory serves) that is reg number was something similar to LIL 6600. She was a rough looking truck, but never let me down, except once in Bordeaux Cestas, where I had to limp her round the ring into the services after a clutch hydraulic pipe snapped. I used to love the crackle from her engine.

Anyway, I digress… Some of the pictures in this thread have really invoked some fond memories, and if I close my eyes, and take myself back to the 80’s, I can remember racing down into Southampton from the Mendips when my Dad (Bev Wyatt - Fergie) used to drive for Ian Root. He had a ERF with a 290 ■■■■■■■ in her, and I (still to this day) love the sound of the Jake Brake. Nothing can beat the sound of a Jake and a ■■■■■■■■ Dad then progressed onto a 4300 Cat Foden with a Charlton body on it. By God thats thing used to shift! I dont think any tipper could touch that fully loaded up Pepperbox Hill. That thing used to fly!

I remember watching Dad skipping up and down the gears on the TwinSpliiter, then a few years later after passing my own Class One, I worked for Cliff and Grahame Stevens. My first truck, an old F7 with a 13 Speed Fuller in it. What a dog, but I soon learnt how to make her “sing”. So, anyone who knows me, please say Hello. Im keen to catch up with old friends, and hopefully make some new ones to.

Anyone know where Jan Pawinski is these days? Last seen on BKG in Whiteparish. I remember when he got banged up in Novara Italy. I cannot remember if he was on Bulldogs or Mammoths at that time.

Chris (Lee)

one of mo baker’s finest…my dad drove for them until they finished up,he drove this(although in much more standard form),some other transcons and ended up with a very tidy leyland roadtrain, all mo baker’s trucks were getting on in years but were all smart and well cared for

Hi Chris,
Welcome to the site, Jan has retired I think BKG sold his truck and he left !!

He was driving for Louis Bull pulling Mammoth trailers when he had his accident on the old road between Novarra and Milan on a Sunday night tractor unit only, he was in a maximum security prison with members of the Red Brigade not a good time !

Regards Richard

Hi Richard,

Many thanks for the info. Jan is indirectly my uncle, but I havent seen him in years. The last time was when he had a DAF XF on BKG and I caught him at the entrance to Dock Gate 10 Southampton, briefly for a chat. He probably gone back to plumbing now then as that was his trade  I have a clear memory of riding shotgun when I was about 6 years old in an old Red Leyland Bison, possibly a Merryweather for a container company he was working for. I remember going into the docks with him but I wouldnt know who the company he was working for was. It would have been circa 1976

The Italians treated him like ■■■■ when he was banged up in Novara. That was a sad time for Jan I know.

Many thanks for the welcome to.

Regards
Chris

A Volvo F7 with a 13-speed Fuller?? Now there’s some lateral thinking!

It took some getting used to.! God knows why Graham Stevens had it fitted. I used to have to dance my way through the gears on her when coming out of the quarries on the Mendips. When I got to Corsely, and you start up the long hill to Longleat…if you missed any gear, it was curtains

Hi all sorry to have to correct you richard but janic is still working for bkg he had a night out only last week with chippy in buckingham. it was good to see you and angie last week shame it was a sad occasion.

Hi Kev,

Glad he’s still on the road Dave Howard told me he’d finished at Jock’s funeral ! unusual for Dave to get it wrong :unamused: :unamused:
Good to see you too regards to your Jan.

Chris
Yes he had a tough time Angie and I managed to get a visitors pass to see him in there, he then got moved to Florence and the Southampton TV people got involved.
Jan drove the Bison for John Ward, I think it was Mammoths first lorry.
