Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi Tony, yes , there still is. Only thing I can think is, they were parked up for the night, continuing to either Portsmouth or Winchester way the following day !!

Hi all, yes i think you are right about it being wickham square if you look at second picture you can see pub sign for the kings head, but how would they make the first right turn by the bakery down towards the mill, would it have been posible to have backed out (just a thought).Charlie when you and ian were living it up in the churchillian the other day did you notice if they let dogs in the place or is it a bit posh.

Hi All
Gerbil dont worry Im sure they will let you in

Hi All

I spoke with Chris Hill today and the gent says the Pickford Scammells in Wickham Square were indeed overnighting there as Gerbil said & yes they backed out in the morning if they were going Winchester bound but if they were going south bound they simply turned the tractors round.
In these past times the abnormal load route to Winchester was to turn right at Shirrel Heath, Swanmore, Droxford A32 turning left at the West Meon Hut onto the A272 over Cheesefoot Head onto the A31 & to Winchester because of this terrain Hills would supply an extra tractor for this part of the journey.
My father also did extra pushing over Cheesefoot Head with a Thornycroft Amazon cran which legend has it would burn a full tank of PETROL from Winnall to the top of Ceesefoot Head & back.

Hi tribsa in one of Pat’s earlier pics of Hills mention was made of Gordon Prebble, is that the same one who ran Southampton Road Transport (SRT) in later years ?

Gerbil
Ref the Chuchillian pub,no you couldnt say it was posh but as regards dogs I dont think so as they serve a lot of food.Having said that I did notice one or two old dogs I think they may have come up from Portsmouth :unamused: :unamused:

What a coarse man that Tranhit is.No need to speak to Gerbil like that.I’m sure he is a sensitive person underneath that Ruffty Tuffty exterior.I reckon You should say sorry.I’ve got two Westies and I’ve only been allowed to sit outside as they told me I would lower the tone of the place.Having said I was in there some time ago with Nobby Stratton so they can’t be too fussy.

Hi All
There are a couple of good firms which seem not to be getting much attention on this site tw of which our company had good relations with these being Eurohaul does any one have any 70s photos.
The other being R & G I do have some photos of these to put on here.
Another smart firm with very nice drivers was P.B.Mason.

They may have been mentioned on here already  but does anybody remember a firm called Alan or A B Watkins?
Red white and blue Marathon(iirc) needed tyre change at greasy joes- Cirencester one night and the driver shouldnt have been there(allegedly) boring i know but one of those memories that sticks out , when i was tyre fitting - would have been 1980ish

Hi these photos have my name on but they are Mick Henneseys’ and here with his permission.
Hope you all enjoy
Taken in Portugal a while ago.

Remember the 2 R and G Globetrotters, one was driven by Steve Holland and the other by Ian ■■?

There WAS a cafe just off the by-pass near Spitfire Bridge, It was off the turning going over rhe top of the hill towards Morstead / Droxford, but that was WAY back in the '60’s. Any older lads remember it ? have’nt a clue what the name was.

HI Fergie
There was a caravan cafe where the A31 & A272 meet but it miraculeusly burnt down when the DOT wanted to dual that junction. Robs pic has houses in the back ground.

Hi Kerbut
