Hi all, just found out that John Compton that many / most of you will remember from the heyday of
International work, has just received some sad news.
John has an aggressive tumour on his brain and has been given only 3/6 months to live.
I,m trying to organise a get together at Johns local club, The Whitehead Centre, Wick lane, Downton. SP5 3NF.
for Sunday lunchtime on the 3rd June.
Snacks will be laid on, and a few quid behind the bar.
Please spread the word, it would mean a lot to John to see his old mates before he pops his clogs.
Any that can definitely make it, please let me know…thanks , Tony.
Sad news about Compo but lets hope he is fit and able to come to the August Bash one more time. Sadly i go home on the 2nd of June so can’t make the gig. Tony.

Dean that truck I believe is going past Town Quay at the bottom of town where the IOW ferry go’s from, BFC long gone and yard all built on now, Buzzer
I agree Buzzer thats where i thought it was taken.
Dean that pic of Pitters sudden accident as we used to call them back in the day looks like its heading to load fruit by the pallets on the trailer, they used to have a dock runner as they were quite big in that field and I used to do loads for them all those years ago as well as Portway, Buzzer.
Not exactly Southampton but I was thinking tother day of the times I went from Sheffield to ISR Hythe and having to go through Winchester and that bad left hand turn in the town. What year was the Winchester by-pass opened, early 70s maybe?

Chris i cant remember it not being there in my trucking days but someone will surely know on here, i do however remember the old bypass which had the Hockly traffic lights on it which caused more traffic jams than that, they should have had a French system with filter on and off far better in my opinion as once you stop the flow every thing takes ages to start moving again.
When i was a kid we used to go to Worcester Park in London to visit my dads parents and back then every thing had to go through Winchester and on to Hursley then Romsey and holiday traffic going south came to a halt at Cadnam roundabout, not so much traffic back then but it still got completely clogged up. My mates dad ran two garages on the road near Cadnam and they dealt with loads of overheating cars in the great get away back then, cheers Buzzer.

It was a long way from Sheffield to Totton or Hythe in those days.Down M1,then to Towcester, down the A43 to Oxford, then Newbury - always busy - then the A33 to Winchester and then that bit of S’oton ring road to Millbrook (I think). We used to get back to Leicester Forest legallish for a dodgy,AEC MK3 and 5 Mammoth Majors, loaded both ways.

Hi Chris/Buzzer,
I put a couple of photos of the Winchester bypass on Davis International thread, they are at the bottom of page 298, it states 1933 the first by pass opened! And yes those lights at Hockley was a pain,

Bloody hell, 1933? You must be a helluva lot older than me Chris if you had to go through the town.
I well remember those lights, bombing along on what you thought was a modern road and then…those lights.
