DFDS? Not to mention P&O Ferries and Townsend Thoresen back in the late 70’s early 80’s!

Townsend Thoresen eh Gazzer, single story office building which was round the back of Normandy ferries but they both shared the same departure lounge. That building had curved wooden beams if I remember looked like an upturned Viking ship. Also used to get gate passes from that little brick office when Mackpack were operating out of there, Phil Garrett was a pimpley faced nipper when I first knew him, how time has rushed on cheers Buzzzer.
And to get your “T Forms” go to the Customs & Excise “cubicle” opposite P&O Normandy Ferries entrance, after you have wandered back from “The Marsh.”
And the open frounted shed just inside the gate of Normandy Ferries where the customs men used to dip the tanks of L,Giraud carrying Brandy and depositing said contents into ready cleaned out thermos flasks, and they thought we did not notice them silly boys, Buzzer.

Hi Charlie,
Happy Christmas to you and Rose, Angie and I will get up and see you over the Festive period,I’ll let you know when we are coming so you can be out
Before John met “The Boss” he might have been up Nateley, because every time I go on Penn common Bramshaw this bird called Nateley keeps asking me if I know him,she used to sharpen the saws at East’s sawmill
I am a bit worried about Angie, as I was on my way home the other night, she phoned to say she was in casualty, I got home and watched the programme, never saw her,and was still waiting for my tea when she got home
Hope everyone has a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year, especially Pat.
Richard

TK Dave:
Cast your minds back to the mid 1970s ( younger members ask your parents or grand parents). Anyone recall the following two firms who worked out of Southampton Docks?Arthur Kneller Transportation. Yellow and blue rigid flatbeds (general haulage tramping in a Leyland Terrier or Ford D series four-pot day cab anyone?)
BFC. Had a yard at Eastleigh and the Cunard container contract, although also did general. May have owned AKT (see above). Known without much affection as ‘Barney’s Flying Circus.’
Any recollections, observations and especially pictures welcome. I worked briefly for AKT, (who’s transport manger was an ex-Middle East hand,) and where I learned to rope and sheet.
A.K.T. Arthur Kneller Transport was owned strangely by Arthur Kneller , The company was brought out or amalgamated into BFC transport Ltd , during the late 70’s ,Yes they did have some TK’s and D series they also had an old FG driven by one of the hardest working old man I’ve ever known , his name was JIM and he lived in millbrook Southampton .
BFC was started by Barrie Jellis and Bill Aldridge and was originally based at Common Barn Farm in Chestnut ave , Eastleigh (Bill’s Farm). They started with 2 xVolvo F86 units which were working for ACL at 201 Berth , My father was the transport manager for ACL at the time …it all developed from there, Finally Barrie , Arthur and some of the co-workers from BFC left Bill Aldridge and started their own companies those being Shamara Transport , Maidber Transport , Pentalver Transport , The rest as they say is History…
Richard.Further to you missive re Angie I was at Alton station this morning going through the ashtrays looking for dogends when I noticed two East Europeans at the ticket office asking for two returns to Jeopardy.I asked them what for? They replied that they had read in the paper that there were fifteen hundred jobs in jeopardy and they were going there to apply.Very enterprising of them.Regards Charlie
tight get even borrowed one of your photos Pat
regards Johnnie

Hi and welcome to the forum I remember your dad Neville■■?
I did some work for Maidber mainly pulling ACLZ’s a lotof which were heavy and went to Grove Cranes Bicester
Regards Pat
Happy Christmas to one and all on here, and a big thanks for the memories you keep returning, and for the entertainment, must be a real hoot when you lot get together for your reunions!
I have been charged with organising a friends photo collection, and b#gger me the very first picture I pull out of the very first pack belongs to a certain Pat Duffy, KOW 496Y, pulling a Aquila trailer, complete with ‘L’ plates and a Isle of Mann TT Races sunstrip. No time to scan any of them yet but maybe that will bring back a memory for someone?
Again, Happy Christmas and New Year, all the very best and get well soon Pat.
I also remember Neville Lagdon at ACL during my time with Fred Croucher.
We also pulled those ACLZ flats Pat, I recall taking a few of of them loaded with pipes to
the Dartford power station when it was being built…A few years ago now.
I probably know or have met you Mr Lagdon.
Not sure how many sons Neville had, but I worked for Phil when he was at Securicor, Chris when he was
at Carter’s and I,m sorry I can’t rememberer the other name, but there was also a brother that drove
for Securicor.
To all the other regular users of this thread, may I take this opportunity to wish you all
A Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
I know yours won’t be so good Pat, but I,m sure you,ll make up for it when you get home in February
Or hopefully sooner. Perhaps we could have a Mini bash for you.
