Hiya that hulo kraan is interesing. thats the setup Ensor at Sandbach used i never knew what company made the cranes
the trailers had the same rear steer bougi idea as well.they would go down a narrow street then turn left without
swinging out across the street and the trailer wheels would follow the kerb and not mount the pavement. problem
is the trailers was heavy.interesting write up to me.thanks john
i was a fitter at Ensor and had to go up to Eaglescliffe which was were Hulo had there Uk base for 2 weeks on a training course . a very good bit of kit was the Hulo run on a bank of batteries mounted on the crane and recharged from the unit in transit. the later ones we had at Ensor had donkey engines to charge the batteries up spent many a happy hour repairing them
Hiya …hell fire Jeff we must think to gether i was writing about the cranes just now trying to find you
saying there was photo,s of the trailers. i clicked on the story and you had responded and i was to repost
anyhow you have seen it now very interesting to me as i have nt seen any photo,s or trailers since about 1978ish
when i was last in Ensor at Wheelock.what year was you there as you must have gone to Beresfords after Ensor.
Hiya…news on the ERF trailers. they was assembled at Jennings ERF had taken over Jennings to get more factory space.
it took a few years to finish all the ordered horse boxes liberties caravanetts and god knows what else we built.
the main chassis legs come ready made, Jennings made the cross members and bearers. the running gear was Rubery Owen.
the trailers was welded up by Fred Bossons jennings welder in house…Yes he was good. another chap Arthur Banton come later from the rail sheds at Crewe.it was Fred that did the trailers. they was only 36 ft long as i remember. the brakes was first class
as i car shared with a test driver, he told me how good they would stop.there is a photo of a ERF trailer behind a Bakers heavy
haulage ERF on the scrapbook site…the only photo ive seen. there was no production line, after a horse box had been built
and moved into the pain shop the trailer was assembled and moved out another trailer was started a few months later.
everything at Jennings was hand made.if i was to put my head on the line i,d say no more than 6 maybe 8 trailers was made
it was nt a big issue as i remember. they was built to TIR standard as tilt trailers.as i remember in 1967 a 36ft trailer was as big as you had.40 ft ers may have been for special work.but come along in maybe 1972 or 73.
John

John: this is an invaluable insight into the ERF trailer history, so I have started a new thread on ERF trailers and cut & pasted your piece above onto the new thread - hope you don’t mind. Respectfully yours, Robert

Hi Jackslad, no, this is Graham Shone, maybe Clive Shones son? Who was their cousin I think, also from Buckley, as he had trucks also.

Hi steelboy ,I was sure it has john shone on the door ,I will take a closer look next time.
Hiya jeff i was in Ensor 77. 8. 9.with an Hiab…you see XFA she was sitting in Ensors yard at Woodville ■■?with no Engine Harrisons at Milton
who i worked for had the cab to put onto TMV 212 M Charlie Tylman run into the back of his mate another Harriasons driver so a cheap A series
cab was needed. i was loading Pipes in Woodville when i saw XFA. a good find in those days…the hulo cranes was ten times better than a Hiab
but had some sort of short problem on the Electrics if i remember correctly. nice to see XFA in one piece. did nt that lad John drive her at Sandbach
h ed a knackered wrist after an accident i would think i never asked him. great chap he knew all the delivery places.

Hiya have you seen that car on my Facebook site…it was made in Stoke by John Edwards the son of Edwards who owned Beeches garage at the bottom of lime kiln bank they had a fibre glass shop in Keele st Tunstall making parts for Foden and ERf the sons got into making car bodies that fixed onto Ford sit up and beg chassis. mine is one of 3 fixed onto a special ladder chassis.its done 1700 miles from new.it sat in a garden for 40 years rotting away.
